Today’s Quote

“There comes a time when people get tired of being pushed out of the glittering sunlight of life’s July and left standing amid the piercing chill of an alpine November.” – Martin Luther King Jr.

Today’s Thoughts

Weather guy says monsoon will return next week. Just a little break this weekend. Nice.

I have been addicted to the Olympics for decades. I attended some of the ’84 LA Olympics. I got to see Hollyfield box, met Carl Lewis in a Mafia Pizza joint in Santa Monica, and Patrick Ewing. Just watching the athletes perform their sport is unbelievable. They are there to give 100% and they do. For the next 14 days I will be glued to my TV set.

I taped the Opening Ceremony yesterday and finished watching it last night. It certainly was unique. I’m sure it set a record for how long it was. I liked the very limited commercials. I had memories of the Focus Trip with a dinner on a boat down the same route to the Eifel Tower. The Eifel tower was lit as we passed it on the dinner cruise, but the Olympic Tower was awesome. The sometimes very heavy rain didn’t stop the boats or the entertainment on the bridges. I did notice that the announcer called the S. Korea team as being from N. Korea. Ooops. The American announcers were very distracting and seemed unprepared. The Olympic flag ride down the Seine was very unique, as was all the torch bearers who followed the torch till it lit the cauldron. The lighting was very impressive, but didn’t beat the lighting by the archer years ago. Then I learned this morning that they hung the Olympic Flag upside down. Ooops again.

Phrases used by Old-er People that younger people might not understand

“Far Out”

The phrase “far out” was used for something excellent or unbelievable and symbolizes the hippie culture’s influence on boomer slang. Rooted in the psychedelic culture of the ‘60s and ‘70s, it conveys enthusiasm and approval, much like today’s “awesome” or “amazing.” It has fallen out of common usage in modern times, but you could always try to bring it back!

Did you Know…?

Chimpanzees Have Declared War On Gorillas

After millennia of seemingly coexisting peacefully, chimpanzees and gorillas are suddenly in a deadly battle. In early 2019, German researchers noticed increasing violence between the species while observing them inside Loango National Park in Gabon.

While studying the behaviors of chimps in the park, researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology and Osnabrück University witnessed a brutal attack by two dozen chimps on a group of five Western lowland gorillas, including one baby. The ambush resulted in a long fight between the groups, and the demise of the baby gorilla. Later that year, another attack by a large group of chimps took place in the same park. Again, the gorillas were largely outnumbered, and a baby gorilla died.

While they're both primates - and are even in the same family, Hominidae - the two are very different in temperament. Gorillas tend to be gentle, whereas chimpanzees are well known for their violent tendencies. Although their aggression has mostly been directed internally, researchers believe chimps may be feeling increasingly threatened by gorillas due to various changes to their environment. Decreasing territory and fewer food sources might be making the chimps extra aggressive. But where and when the war will end, nobody knows.
