Today’s Quote                                                        Today’s Meme

"One benefit of Summer was that each day we had more light to read by."

— Jeannette Walls

Today’s Thoughts

July is here. I’m looking forward to a great month.

Our discussion group was great. We didn’t settle any of the ‘Green Energy’ debates but certainly have a better understanding of the gravity of decisions we make. The solution: maybe like in The Day the Earth Stood Still  where the alien convinced the political leaders that they have to unite. In the current scenario, there would be a group of scientists from all countries in the world who would work together to fix our climate. Here’s hoping.

Biden is looking good on the campaign trail, but I still have concerns about his health.

 1965 was 59 years ago…

·         Race Riots Break Out In Watts, California leaving large parts of the city burnt and looted and 34 dead.

·         Northeast blackout including Parts of Canada and U.S. North East

·         St. Louis, Missouri, the 630-foot-tall parabolic steel Gateway Arch is completed ( The St Louis Arch ).

·         The Voting Rights Act, guaranteeing African Americans the right to vote becomes law

·         The Gemini Space Program continues into 1965 and lay the groundwork for an eventual manned mission to the moon.

·         The Palm Sunday Tornado Outbreak on April 13th : An estimated fifty-one tornadoes (forty-seven confirmed) hit in six Midwestern states

·         The popular daytime soap opera "Days of Our Lives" debuted on NBC

·         Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. leads civil rights march in Alabama from Selma to Montgomery.

·         Malcolm X shot in New York

·         Lyndon B. Johnson announces his program to create Medicare and to expand his war on poverty

Origin of common phrases

Get go

"Get go," meaning from the beginning, originated in Black English. It was used in print by Toni Cade Bambara, a 1960s civil rights activist, who wrote fiction set in the rural South and in Harlem.

False Facts about religions

Jewish People Are a Race

Jews aren’t a race of people, but rather, they follow the religion of Judaism. Maybe in ancient Biblical times, they were limited to the Israelites, but today, there are Black, Caucasian, and Asian Jews from diverse ethnic and national backgrounds. If you adopt the faith of Judaism today, you will become a Jew yourself.
