Today’s Thoughts
If most days in June
are going to be at or near 90 here, I am starting to fear the heat in July.
The heat and dry weather
has place all 1.95 million acres of Coconino National Forest in ‘High Danger’
of fire. Again, this is early. June is usually dry but much cooler.
The Bravo fire near Flagstaff
is no 85% contained. Any smoke has disappeared since Monday.
During the early
1970’s, Jerry West was on the top of his game. At Shonto, there was a staff
basketball team that played evenings. One of the teachers got the nickname Jerry
West as he looked a little like him. Sad to hear that the BB star has passed at
86.
Indigenous People to Know
Sharice
Davids
A member
of the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin, Representative Sharice Davids was a
professional athlete, business owner, lawyer, and nonprofit executive before
she was elected to Congress in January 2019. As one of the two Indigenous
American women serving in Congress, Davids is dedicated to reducing poverty,
creating safe working conditions, and closing the pay gap for Indigenous women.
Origin of common phrases
Open a can of worms
To "open a can of worms"
means to cause a multitude of problems in the process of trying to solve one.
It dates to the 1950s when fishermen would buy sealed metal cans of earthworms
for bait, and opening the can to get one worm could mean many would crawl out.
