Today’s Thoughts
The breeze is
keeping things a little cooler than expected.
I live at the base
of Mt. Elden, one of Flagstaff’s mountains. At the top of the mountain are
radio towers that are used for our local radio stations, emergency
communication, and a few over-the-air Phoenix TV stations. On Saturday a small
fire broke out near some of the towers. Thankfully it was quickly contained
before it could spread. I have lived through 2 major fires on this mountain.
The first was when I was in grad school one summer. The other was a few years
ago, soon after I retired. Both remind long-time locals how dangerous fires can
be.
On June 2, 1924 the
Indian Citizenship Act allowed all Federally recognized tribal members to vote.
A huge step. However it didn’t allow them to vote in all states until 1957. Sadly
many Americans don’t know about these laws.
Indigenous People to Know
Ben
Nighthorse Campbell
The
National Native American Veterans Memorial opened its doors to the public on
Veterans Day in 2020. This museum honors the contributions of the Indigenous
community and would not have been erected without the support of former
Colorado senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell. When Campbell was elected in 1992, he
was the first Indigenous American to serve in the Senate in over 60 years and
the only Indigenous American in Congress. Beside being a former congressman and
a member of the Northern Cheyenne tribe, Campbell is a Korean War vet, former
Olympian, rancher, and jewelry designer.

your life; you just have to take a few steps in one direction, and other
opportunities will open up.” 38 –
