Today’s Quote                                                        Today’s Meme

To know that we know what we know, and to know that we do not know what we do not know, that is true knowledge.

--Nicolaus Copernicus

Today’s Thoughts

The breeze is keeping things a little cooler than expected.

I live at the base of Mt. Elden, one of Flagstaff’s mountains. At the top of the mountain are radio towers that are used for our local radio stations, emergency communication, and a few over-the-air Phoenix TV stations. On Saturday a small fire broke out near some of the towers. Thankfully it was quickly contained before it could spread. I have lived through 2 major fires on this mountain. The first was when I was in grad school one summer. The other was a few years ago, soon after I retired. Both remind long-time locals how dangerous fires can be.

On June 2, 1924 the Indian Citizenship Act allowed all Federally recognized tribal members to vote. A huge step. However it didn’t allow them to vote in all states until 1957. Sadly many Americans don’t know about these laws.

Indigenous People to Know

Ben Nighthorse Campbell

The National Native American Veterans Memorial opened its doors to the public on Veterans Day in 2020. This museum honors the contributions of the Indigenous community and would not have been erected without the support of former Colorado senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell. When Campbell was elected in 1992, he was the first Indigenous American to serve in the Senate in over 60 years and the only Indigenous American in Congress. Beside being a former congressman and a member of the Northern Cheyenne tribe, Campbell is a Korean War vet, former Olympian, rancher, and jewelry designer.

Origin of common phrases

Get go

"Get go," meaning from the beginning, originated in Black English. It was used in print by Toni Cade Bambara, a 1960s civil rights activist, who wrote fiction set in the rural South and in Harlem.

“I just found it interesting to talk to adults I admired and to discover that the path they took was never all that clearly defined. It was comforting to me when I figured out that you don’t have to know what you want to do with your life; you just have to take a few steps in one direction, and other opportunities will open up.”

38 – Rafael Nadal, tennis star

@79 – Paulette Goddard, American actress, model (d. 1990; heart failure)

“You live in the present and you eliminate things that don’t matter. You don’t carry the burden of the past. I’m not impressed by the past very much. The past bores me, to tell you the truth; it really bores me. I don’t remember many movies and certainly not my own.”

@70 – Allen Ginsberg, American poet (d. 1997; heart failure)

@68 – Josephine Baker, French actress, singer, dancer, French Resistance operative (d. 1975; stroke)

“Surely the day will come when color means nothing more than the skin tone when religion is seen uniquely as a way to speak one’s soul; when birth places have the weight of a throw of the dice and all men are born free, when understanding breeds love and brotherhood.”

…The End for today…
