Today’s Thoughts
A cloudy day for a
change. There is only a 15% of precipitation, but sure seems much cooler.
The local Bravo fire
is now 100% contained.
I got a call last
night that one of our discussion group members has passed. He was out with friends
on a hiking trail. One of the others injured his ankle and Phil went ahead to
find help. A little layer another hiker came by and called for help. Phil hadn’t
returned so they went looking for him. They found him sitting against a tree.
He had passed away. There are still lots of questions, but most believe it was either
heatstroke or heart attack. He had been a member for about a year and will be
missed.
Just to be clear, I
am tired of the hypocrisy in our politics. What has happened to our statesmen?
Changing a stance is important, but that is not what is happening. From my
point of view, Trump and his allies are the worst, but both sides are committing
it almost every day.
Indigenous People to Know
Tommy
Orange
Author
Tommy Orange is a member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes, but he wasn't
surrounded by the Indigenous community in his hometown of Oakland, California.
His debut novel, "There There," won an award at the 2018 National
Book Circle Awards. In sharing the Indigenous perspective in a contemporary
way, Orange speaks about the relocation of his people to the cities and how
assimilative culture has left many Indigenous communities feeling
"voiceless" and underrepresented.
Origin of common phrases
Long in the tooth
Referring to being old, the term "long in the tooth"
can first be found in a South Dakota newspaper in 1889, when a prospective
buyer was trying to judge the age of a horse. Horses' teeth keep
growing through their lives—although they are
ground down as the horses eat—and so are used to determine their age.
