Today’s Quote                                                        Today’s Meme

"And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer."

— F. Scott Fitzgerald

Today’s Thoughts

I guess the heat dome is no joke. Another hot day.

The Bravo fire, about 15 miles from Flagstaff, was at 1000 acres yesterday afternoon. This morning it was 1500 acres and 25% contained. It’s another day of smoke here.

The US Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Northern Arapaho tribe. The 5-4 decision ruled that the Indian Health Service must pay contract support costs incurred by tribes. This decision could provide millions to Federally recognized tribes in the US.

Trump is blabbing that his campaign has received $400 million plus in donations since his convection. The campaign says it was closer to $140 million.

PBS fund raising gives good programming. Last night I watched the 1981 Central Park concert with Simon and Garfunkel. Great memories of times long gone.

Lenny, my brother’s ½ birth brother and his wife are going to visit Richard in October. I’m thinking seriously about joining them in Mexico.

Indigenous People to Know

Louise Erdrich

The Pulitzer Prize–winning author of "The Night Watchman," Louise Erdrich has written children's books, novels, poetry, and a memoir. A member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, Erdrich lives in Minneapolis where she owns an independent bookstore. The award-winning author elevates the history and culture of her people, especially the Indigenous community in North Dakota, and is deeply connected to their fight for survival.

Origin of common phrases

Raring to

"Raring to," as in very eager, seems to have originated in the early 19th-century South. It's likely to have come from rearing, when a horse rises up on its hind legs in excitement or agitation.
