Today’s Thoughts
A nice day.
The DOJ released a 120
page report that the Phoenix police department engages in a pattern of racial
discrimination against Black, Hispanic, and Native Americans. The report covers
2010-2022. Lots of changes are outlined. This is not news to anyone in AZ.
Hopefully the city and department will continue to work with the DOJ to correct
these horrific practices.
I started following
news and politics in 6th grade. My teacher had us reading the daily
paper and searching out specific articles for a scrapbook every week. We also
had to memorize all the US Department heads, the Supreme Court members, and our
local Colorado leaders. I continue to follow the news today. However I have
noticed that I am forgetting some important events and much of my chronology is
a little off. When asked about something from 20 years ago, I can easily go to
1980 or 2000. To help me out I’m adding a new reminder in the category below. I
hope it helps me.
1960 was 64 years ago…
§ American novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee was
published
§ Construction on the Aswan High Dam in Egypt began
§ First televise U.S. Presidential debate takes place between
Kennedy and Nixon
§ OPEC ( Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries ) is
formed
§ John F Kennedy wins presidential Election
§ President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs the Civil Rights Act
of 1960 into law
§ Soviet missile shoots down the US U2 spy plane
§ United States announces that 3,500 American soldiers are
going to be sent to Vietnam
§ United States Supreme Court decides the Boynton v. Virginia
(Civil Rights) case

Origin of common phrases
Upper hand
The phrase "upper hand" comes from
determining which team bats first in playground baseball games. Opposing team
captains would grasp a bat, starting at the bottom, and alternate their hands
until reaching the top. The player holding the bat at the top had the upper
hand.
