Today’s Thoughts

It looks like a few days of heavy monsoon rains. No complaints.

Olympic track and field just gets better every day. Great events and races.

Uranium mining has been a problem on and near the Navajo Rez for ½ a century. Many Navajo have died or become seriously ill from the tailing left by unscrupulous mining companies. Now one of those mines is transporting uranium across the Rez without correct safety permits. It was discovered a few weeks ago and now the courts have stepped in with an injunction. This is so inexcusable.

I keep seeing ads begging for money for candidates that are not in my state or my district. I see this as unpatriotic. If you ain’t on my ballot, don’t ask for my money.

American History…

9. When did the American Civil War end?

Incorrect: April 9, 1865 Correct: May 9, 1865

If you thought the Civil War ended when Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, you'd be off the mark. Following the Battle of Appomattox Court House in Virginia on April 9, 1865, it took a full month for the Union to declare victory. But, once Confederate Joseph E. Johnston surrendered his army on April 26, 1865, the war was all but over. President Andrew Johnson officially declared victory on Aug. 20, 1866.

Historic Events

  • 1890 – The first electrocution as the death penalty was carried out in Auburn, NY. William Kemmler was executed for murdering his common-law wife, Matilde Ziegler.
  • 1926 – Gertrude Ederle became the first woman to swim across the English Channel (14 hours, 31 minutes).
  • 1945, August 6, 8:15 AM, an atomic bomb (Little Boy) was dropped over Hiroshima, Japan, injuring or killing over 200,000 people.
  • The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was signed, designed to make voting easier for minorities.
