Today’s Thoughts

Great day for a walk. So, I walked around the neighborhood. Then did the laundry.

I was taught to honor those who served in the military. I don’t always agree with Politicians decisions regarding war, but I still honor those who serve. I do not know, or have I ever agreed with Mr. Trump’s disgusting sentiments for those who have served. How can any true American vote for him to be Commander in Chief of our military.

Random Thoughts…

The cracking sound you hear from a whip is actually the whip breaking the speed of sound and creating a small sonic boom.

In his 1225 essay on the nature of color (Du Luce/On Light), the English Bishop Robert Grosseteste described the birth of the Universe in an explosion and the crystallization of matter to form stars and planets in a set of nested spheres around Earth, seven centuries before the Big Bang theory.

All gerbils in the US descend from 20 caught in Mongolia in 1935 for research purposes.

Roman citizens who did not have land were deemed unfit for battle since they would not have something to protect.

The Ouija board got its name after being asked what is should be called. When asked what it meant, the board allegedly replied, “good luck.”

California has a larger GDP than any other country except for China, Japan, Germany, and the UK.

American History…

What was the Wild West really like?

Incorrect: Violent and lawless Correct: Pretty tame, actually

To take it from John Wayne and Butch Cassidy, the old West was an unpredictable free-for-all—just one region-wide, decades-long brawl. But Peter J. Hill, a senior fellow at the Property and Environment Research Center, puts the truth succinctly: "The violence of the [Wild] West is largely a myth." Even the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, perhaps the most storied shootout of the entire era, resulted in a relatively modest body count of three.

Historic Events

  • 1872 – The first mail-order catalogs were published by Montgomery Ward. In 2000, the retail outlet was closed.
  • 1920 – The 19th Amendment to the US Constitution granted women the right to vote.
  • 1960 “The Pill” – birth control went on sale.
