Thoughts for the day
The
beginning of a new month always brings change. I’m not quite ready for the
monsoon to end, nor for the days to get a lot cooler. Hopefully the change will
be very slow.
I
just learned that back in the 1980’s, Sesame Street had a mean real estate
mogul named Ronald Grump. It WAS a
parody of Donald.
War
is always horrific. Learning that polio is now infecting children in Gaza only
adds to the horror. Aid workers have worked very hard to get vaccine into the
war-torn area. Today they begin inoculating the population. That is a good
first step.

Slang Words…
Gaslight
- Pop culture reference point: "Gaslight" (1944)
"Gaslighting" can be traced back to George Cukor's
1944 film "Gaslight,"
in which a young woman's (Ingrid Bergman) husband (Charles Boyer) orchestrates
strange behaviors around their home—such as knocking on the walls and dimming
the gas lights—to convince his wife and their acquaintances that she's losing
her grip on reality. The film was based on a 1938 play called "Gas
Light."
These days, it's recognized as a form of psychological
manipulation in which an abuser tries to create self-doubt and confusion
in their victim's mind.
Historic Events
- 1983 – Korean Airlines
flight 007 was shot down over the Soviet Union with 269 onboard.
- 1985 – The Titanic was
discovered about 350 miles southeast on Newfoundland, Canada
- 1999 – The German government
moved from Bonn to Berlin
- 2004 – The Beslan school
siege began with armed terrorists taking schoolchildren and school staff
hostage in North Ossetia, Russia. Three days later more than 385 people,
including many of the children, were killed.

Answer
The person stating this question is doing so on
January 1, and their birthday is December 31. So two days before New Year’s
Day, the person was 21. On December 31, they turned 22, and in the current
year, they'll turn 23 — which means the next year, they'll turn 24. Thankfully,
no leap days are involved.
