Today’s Thoughts

Another nice very warm day.

Last night, around 8pm, there was a thunderstorm that even my phone noticed. I got one of those loud alerts taking me to take cover immediately. All good ‘cause I was at home, sitting watching the Olympics.

I’ve been trying for a couple of days to make reservations to Mexico in October. I’m trying to make a multi-city flight Phx to Merida and then a week later Leon, Mexico to Phx on United. I’ve tried but the internet machine won’t let me. Today I refused to give up. I got on the internet, filled everything in, and it wouldn’t let me, but gave me a phone number to call. I did that and Tom did it for me. It took him a good 30 minutes and he kept apologizing for how long it was taking. No problem, it’s all set now.

I can’t even imagine the size of the Park fire in CA. 400,000 acres, larger than LA. So far this fire season there has been 4.5 million acres burned so far. For this time in fire season, that is 1million acres more than last year. And then there are the Colorado fires. So very devastating.

As I am enjoying the Olympics, I remain amazed by some of the countries that have athletes competing. The news media talks about these countries having monumental internal strife, devastating rebel groups that pray on their citizens. Yet they send athletes to the Olympics. Here are a few I find impressive: South Sudan, Ukraine, Central African Republic, Somalia, Haiti. I’m sure there are others.

The Kootenai Native American Tribe in Idaho declares war on the United States

More Information and Timeline for the Kootenai War

On September 20th the sixty-seven members of the Native American Kootenai tribe, headed by Amy Trice, declares war on the United States government as a final effort to gain attention to the tribe's loss of land and subsequent troubles.

The war was peaceful and mainly involved charging tolls to pass through tribal lands near Bonners Ferry, Idaho along US Highway 95. They also distributed information to those passing through detailing the problems of the tribe.

The war gained a lot of publicity for the Kootenai tribe and the US government gave the Kootenai 12.5 acres of land to end the war.

American History…

6. What were the names of Columbus' ships?©Alamy

Incorrect: The Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria

Correct: The Santa Maria, the Santa Clara, and unknown

The Santa Maria was indeed the name of one ship, though the crew called it La Gallega, after the province where it was built, Galicia. The second ship was the Santa Clara but was nicknamed the Niña due to the fact that it was owned by a man named Juan Niño. Finally, the third ship wasn't officially deemed the Pinta, but that's the name that was given to it by saucy sailors who were inspired by the Spanish term for "the painted one" or "prostitute." The ship's original name has been lost to history.

Historic Events

  • 1492 – Christopher Columbus sailed from Palos de la Frontera, Spain, with the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria.
  • 1852 – In the first American intercollegiate athletic event, Harvard University won the first Boat Race between Yale University and Harvard.
  • 1946 – Santa Claus Land, the world’s first themed amusement park, opened in Santa Claus, Indiana.
