Today’s Thoughts
Looks like the monsoon will be around
most of this week. No complaints.
NFL is back. Cards lost their first
pre-season game. Broncos won theirs. I hope both my teams have great seasons.
I’m glad I watched the closing ceremony
last night. I enjoyed most of the festivities. It is always nice to see all the
athletes on the stage at once. I was not impressed after the Olympic Flag was
handed over to LA. Guess I’m too old for the corniness. We all saw Snoop Dog in
Paris, then suddenly he was on Long Beach. Not even the Concorde can fly that
fast. I did like the President of the Olympic Committee saying that Paris began
a new era of equality to the Olympics. I’ll wait and see if I attend the ’28 festivities.
I really enjoyed my ’84 first week Olympic visit. I was a tad younger back
then.

I wonder how many item features I
don’t know about because I have never read an instruction manual for anything.
No word in the English language rhymes
with plankton.
Searching for Bigfoot should be
outlawed because at this point it’s clear he values his privacy and that should
be respected.
American History…
Who created the
original American flag?
Incorrect: Betsy Ross Correct: Francis Hopkinson (maybe)
Betsy Ross was never credited with the creation of the flag at any
point during her lifetime. In fact, it wasn't until nearly a century later, in
1870—two decades after her death, by the way—that anyone thought to give her
credit. William J. Canby presented a paper on the matter to the
Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and Ross was quickly established in
American legend as the creator of the flag. (Not for nothing: Canby was
Ross' grandson.)
However, historians aren't 100-percent sure Ross deserves the credit.
Accounts differ on who the creator might have been, but some historians believe
the honor belongs to Francis Hopkinson, a member of the Continental
Congress—namely because he made the claim while he was still alive. And,
according to The Life and Works of Francis
Hopkinson, he just asked for one thing as payment: A quarter of one cask of wine,
which he never received.
