Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. Nelson Mandela

Thoughts for the day

The beginning of a new month always brings change. I’m not quite ready for the monsoon to end, nor for the days to get a lot cooler. Hopefully the change will be very slow.

I just learned that back in the 1980’s, Sesame Street had a mean real estate mogul named Ronald Grump.  It WAS a parody of Donald.

War is always horrific. Learning that polio is now infecting children in Gaza only adds to the horror. Aid workers have worked very hard to get vaccine into the war-torn area. Today they begin inoculating the population. That is a good first step.

 Riddles

Two days ago I was 21, and next year I'll be 24. When's my birthday?

Random Thoughts…

A group of Zebras is called a Zeal or Crossing or Dazzle or Cohorts or Herd.

George Lucas’ dog was named Indiana.

Pablo Escobar was regarded as the wealthiest criminal in history, with an estimated net worth of $30 billion by the early 1990s.

25 sheets of copy paper are called a quire, and 20 quires make up a ream.

Russia has a larger surface area than Pluto.

Actor Wilford Brimley was once Howard Hughes’ bodyguard.

Slang Words…

Gaslight

- Pop culture reference point: "Gaslight" (1944)

"Gaslighting" can be traced back to George Cukor's 1944 film "Gaslight," in which a young woman's (Ingrid Bergman) husband (Charles Boyer) orchestrates strange behaviors around their home—such as knocking on the walls and dimming the gas lights—to convince his wife and their acquaintances that she's losing her grip on reality. The film was based on a 1938 play called "Gas Light."

These days, it's recognized as a form of psychological manipulation in which an abuser tries to create self-doubt and confusion in their victim's mind.

Historic Events

  • 1983 – Korean Airlines flight 007 was shot down over the Soviet Union with 269 onboard.
  • 1985 – The Titanic was discovered about 350 miles southeast on Newfoundland, Canada
  • 1999 – The German government moved from Bonn to Berlin
  • 2004 – The Beslan school siege began with armed terrorists taking schoolchildren and school staff hostage in North Ossetia, Russia. Three days later more than 385 people, including many of the children, were killed.

Riddles Answer

The person stating this question is doing so on January 1, and their birthday is December 31. So two days before New Year’s Day, the person was 21. On December 31, they turned 22, and in the current year, they'll turn 23 — which means the next year, they'll turn 24. Thankfully, no leap days are involved.

Thoughts for the day

Monsoon is sticking around. No complaints. The forest loves moisture.

I have no big plans for Labor Day but I’m sure something will pop up. If nothing else, the County Fair is here.

The troubled Starliner will return to earth unmanned on the 7th. The astronauts it took to the space station will have to wait until Feb. to return. They say it is due to an abundance of caution. Boeing has a lot riding on the return.

My traveling buddy, Ed, has had a busy summer as he has traveled to several conferences. Each one sounded very interesting.

 Riddles

I’m tall when I’m young and I’m short when I’m old. What am I?

Historic Events

  • 1888 – Mary Ann Nichols was murdered; the first of Jack the Ripper’s confirmed victims.
  • 1962 – Trinidad and Tobago became independent, within the British Commonwealth.
  • 1980 – The Solidarity Movement began in Poland against the Soviet Union. It was led by Lech Walesa.
  • 1997 – Princess Diana was killed in a car crash, involving photographers chasing her and alcohol in the system of her driver.

Riddles Answer

Then it is just made, a candle is at its maximum height, but as it burns, the wax melts and the candle gets smaller and smaller. By the time it's old, the candle is much shorter than when it was made.

Thoughts for the day

Expecting more rain anytime.

I had lunch with our whole retirement group. Good conversation, good food. It was a very nice lunch.

I wish there were more Paralympics on my TV. Most of it is in the early morning hours while I’m sleeping. Guess I’ll have to DVR some of the events.

 Riddles

If you drop me, I will crack. Smile at me, and I smile back. What am I?

Random Thoughts…

Men are six times more likely to be struck by lightning than women.

If you see someone who needs help, stop asking yourself if they need help. Instead, just help.

Prior to 1964, the Mr. Potato Head kits didn’t come with a body as it was expected you would supply your own potato.

A group of Cats (feral) is called a Destruction.

Much like a watched pot never boils, a watched phone never charges.

Historic Events
  • 70 – Titus ended the siege of Jerusalem after destroying The Second Temple.
  • 1967 – Thurgood Marshall was confirmed as the first African American Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.
  • 1984 – The Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-41-D) takes off on its maiden voyage.

Riddles Answer

While all of these things would crack if you dropped them, only a mirror will show your reflection and "smile back" at you if you smile at it.
