Thoughts for the day

A very nice Labor Day. Back in the day, many things couldn’t be done on the weekend, so I had to use a Federal Holiday to do that business. Now that I’m retired, I almost never do any shopping on a Federal Holiday. I just enjoy the day and hope that those working are getting time and half or double time for giving up their Federal Holiday. When I was working at the grocery store I got double time for a Federal Holiday and time and half for Sundays. Thank you unions.

Yesterday I listened to an interview with Sec. of Education Linda McMahon on MSNBC. While her plan sounds fairly reasonable, the important thing to watch is the actions of her department. So far, I’m not very happy with her department’s actions.

I got a text from Faith this morning about 11am letting me know they had arrived back in Flagstaff. They had taken some of their grandson’s ‘stuff’ to him in college and they also took his gir friend so she could be ready for classes there. Then Andy and Faith visited her relatives for a few days. Nice trip.

Myths from Medieval Times

Knight's Armor Was Light And Easy To Wear

All that steel-plated armor and chain mail looks heavy, doesn't it? In reality, it was actually quite light. Knight armor weighed between 10 and 15 pounds, which is actually less than modern soldiers carry. American soldiers have to haul 60 pounds of gear at least.

That said, certain types of armor were heavier than others. In 2011, a study found that 15th-century French armor required knights to use twice as much energy as the English did. Contrary to common belief, the sword was the lightest part, only around 2.5 to 3.5 pounds.

Things That Worked Better Before They Were “Improved” by Technology

Vending Machines That Accepted Wrinkled Bills

The old mechanical bill acceptors weren’t picky about slightly wrinkled dollars. Today’s machines with their sophisticated sensors often reject perfectly good bills multiple times, leaving you frustrated and still hungry. Sometimes the simple mechanical solution really was the better one.

Random Thoughts…

As a kid my parents taught me to not believe everything I see on TV, now I have to teach them to not believe everything they see on Facebook.

The Olympics should have a 'For Fun' section at the end of all the games so all the athletes can try different sports.

Tall people are expected to use their reach to help shorter people, but if a tall person were to ask a short person to hand them something they dropped on the floor it'd be insulting.

What if Earth is like one of those uncontacted tribes in South America, like the whole Galaxy knows we're here but they've agreed not to contact us until we figure it out for ourselves.
