Thoughts for the day

Labor Day weekend has had great weather.  I am reminded that this holiday is possible due to the work of Unions. They bring us good wages, good work hours, overtime pay, and a host of other accomplishments.

I spent some time this morning getting caught up with my mail. It was successful.

I watched part of the Alabama/Florida State football game. It was a good game with the Florida State upset. At the final buzzer the Florida State crowd emptied the bleachers onto the field. I looked unusual but the broadcasters said nothing. Today I read that Florida State could be fined $50,000 for that, as their league has a new rule about nonplayers on the field. A second violation would be $100,000 and a third would be $200,000. I keep an eye out to see what happens.

I do not believe we should have convicted felons who are illegal immigrants in our country. It seems to me that ICE is going too far with their arrests. Last week they went to the state of Washington and arrested 2 firefighters who were actively fighting a huge fire. They checked all the active firefighters at the fire for citizenship papers. To me this is a bridge too far.

Myths from Medieval Times

Democracy Existed

During the Middle Ages, many countries--including France, England, Spain, and Germany--had monarchies. However, some democratic institutions formed before the Medieval Era. In 930, the first assembly of the Alþingi convened in Iceland, which is regarded as the world's first parliamentary system.

In the 13th century, parliaments formed in England and France. The first one was created in 1215 with the Magna Carta. These groups were summoned by the king, and they were mostly men. However, they made major strides toward democracy and representation in these Medieval civilizations.

Things That Worked Better Before They Were “Improved” by Technology

TV Sets You Could Actually Fix

When your old tube TV acted up, you could often fix it by replacing a vacuum tube or adjusting the antenna. Today’s flat-screen TVs offer amazing picture quality, but when they break, they’re usually destined for the recycling center. The repair costs often exceed the price of a new set, creating unnecessary waste and expense.

Random Thoughts…

Theme parks can snap a crystal clear picture of you on a roller coaster at 70 mph, but bank cameras can't get a clear shot of a robber standing still.

If my calculator had a history, it would be more embarrassing than my browser history.

Lawyers hope you get sued, doctors hope you get sick, cops hope you're criminal, mechanics hope you have car trouble, but only a thief wishes prosperity for you.
