Today’s Quote                                                        Today’s Meme

Learn to value yourself, which means: to fight for your happiness.

--Ayn Rand

Today’s Thoughts

A little cloudy but lots of warmth. Fine Day.

While doing my reading for today’s discussion group, I was reminded of a couple of things. First, the old margarine commercial ‘It’s not nice to fool mother nature” and second, many indigenous cultures believe that while many mainstream cultures believe man can control nature, the indigenous believe we live in harmony with nature. The articles I read were about climate change and how many groups are trying to control nature with no understanding the severe consequences that could very easily take place. This should be a good discussion.

Did you Know?

 Origin of common phrases NEW!

Piece of cake

In the 19th century, it was common to award cakes to winners at competitions, hence the idea of something being a "piece of cake."  "Cakewalk," which has a similar meaning, was actually the name of a dance competition. Plantation owners in the pre-Civil War South served as judges at cakewalks, wherein enslaved people went through a series of complicated dance moves that were most likely done in mockery of the plantation owners.

Historic Events

*      1848 – Mexico ratified the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, ending the Mexican-American War and ceding California, Nevada, Utah and parts of four other modern-day US states to the United States for $15 million.

*      1962 – Marilyn Monroe sang her famous Happy Birthday to President John F. Kennedy at NYC’s Madison Square Garden.

Birthdays with some quotes

79 – Pete Townshend, English singer-songwriter

“Respect yourself. Try to remember that not everything in life can be perfect. You will make mistakes. That’s inevitable. But you are not ugly. You will only be ugly when you behave in an ugly way.”

76 – Grace Jones, Jamaican-American singer-songwriter

“I believe in individuality, that everybody is special, and it’s up to them to find that quality and let it live.”

@46 – André the Giant (André René Roussimoff), French-American wrestler and actor (d. 1993; heart failure)
