Thoughts for the day

Another nice late summer day.

Our discussion group meets this afternoon to discuss Pandemic Preparedness. In the reading I learned of several ways we are not prepared for another pandemic. Should be a lively discussion.

A few days ago, I commented on the number of political ads I’m seeing in a swing state. Today I learned that this election cycle, politicians expect to spend $16billion on ads. While the US election cycle seems endless, other powerful democracies limit any campaigning from 90 days all the way down to 14 days. Maybe we should rethink our cycle. Also, we have the longest wait time from the election to inauguration day. Note to politicians…no politician must ride a horse to DC to be inaugurated. It’s time to speed that up too.

“The secret to enjoying your job is to have a hobby that’s even worse” – Bill Watterson

Kenny Rogers’ song “The Gambler” is essentially saying the secret to life is to always know the right decision to make.

Slang Words…

Friend zone

- Pop culture reference point: "Friends" (1994)

The notorious "friend zone" refers to a friendship in which one person has unrequited romantic feelings for the other. The term has its roots in the "Friends" Season 1 episode "The One with the Blackout," in which Ross (David Schwimmer) pines after his newly single friend Rachel (Jennifer Aniston).
