Today’s Thoughts
It’s a nice winter day here.
Our discussion group had one of the best meetings in decades. The topic
was Debating America’s Global War—America First vs Liberal Internationalism.
Basically our country has followed Internationalism since the end of WWII.
Our group agreed that we couldn’t understand why the world Liberal was added to
the title. Trump introduced ‘America First’ but has never fully defined
it. This, sadly, has allowed everyone to make the definition fit their beliefs.
His actions have given us a somewhat clearer picture of his idea. He believes
that the countries of the world have cheated the US on many fronts. He wants
the US to control the Western Hemisphere. He will let Russia and China control
Asia and most of Europe. He has shown that he has little respect for many world
leaders, except for dictators. He will be friendly to leaders and countries
that praise him and that give him things he wants. He will demand loyalty to
those he considers friendly. All done to make America first. Our group consensus
was that if he had explained his policy more clearly, he probably would not
have been elected. Now that we know and see his policy in action, we must be
sure that our Constitution and laws are upheld. We know there are people behind
the curtain who are pulling the strings for all of his movements. They have
been hoping for such a leader for several generations. Now they are finally
making it happen and they are happy with it.
After reading and the discussion, I realize that the internationalism I
have lived with my entire life is in peril. The big question is: Do we have the
power and the will to keep internationalism, or will we continue to allow
America First to be our way of life for the decades ahead? The group and I do
not have an answer yet.
The Olympics held their closing ceremony on Sunday afternoon. I enjoyed
watching it.
Historic Trivia
Approximately 750,000 men died in the
Civil War, which was more than 2.5% of America's population at the time.
In Boston on January 15, 1919, a massive storage tank filled with 2.3 million gallons of molasses broke and sent a 15-foot tall flood of the sticky stuff flowing through town, killing 21 people.
In the year 1800, the world population totaled 1 billion. Today — 225 years later — the world's population is more than eight times larger (8.2 billion)
