Thoughts for the day

It looks like another day of gentle rain. No complaints.

On Friday the administration announced that 4000 Federal employees had been laid off during the government shutdown. Not a lot more information from the administration. As a retired federal employee, there is a process and without more information, no one will know what actually happened. If this was a RIF (Reduction in Force), there are procedures that take a whole lot of time. Here’s a memory: When I was a Red Lake, some Title funds dried up, and our school had to RIF an aide. Everyone knows, it’s last one in, first one out. After about 6 months, the RIF list came out. The employee fought it. It turned out she was not to unemployed. After another 3 months, it turns out she signed her paperwork at 8:45AM and another aide, with the same title, signed her paperwork at 10:15AM the same day. As the retained aide said, “I knew I came to work before the other aide came to work.”

I sure hope the current Gaza situation works out for all parties. If it continues to give peace to that region, everyone involved should be congratulated. I have seen many such deals that last a few days, a few months, and even a few years. However, the two sides seem to always find a way to restart this religious situation. Before any awards or congrats are passed out, I want to see if it will hold up for at least a year. If it holds, I will be more that pleased to congratulate all who helped end this religious war. Until then, I will just watch and see.

Bucket-List Destinations That Were Once No-Go Zones

Soweto, South Africa

Soweto is a township on the southwest edge of Johannesburg. It was set aside by the white South African government for black laborers who flocked here from rural areas between World War I and World War II. Conditions were often very poor and the slums here became a hotbed of anger and insurrection against the apartheid regime, culminating in the Soweto Rebellion in 1976, which was partly triggered by government insistence that the Afrikaans language be used in Soweto's schools. Vilakazi Street, in the heart of the township, was once home to Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela.

Since the end of apartheid in 1990 conditions have improved in Soweto, but most of the residents still have to travel into Johannesburg for work. However, tourism is now a growing source of income, with visitors flocking from all around the world to visit the museum in Nelson Mandela’s old house. There’s also a growing foodie and music scene. Ubuntu Kraal Brewery, Soweto Theater, and Locrate Market are popular drop-in spots, while a bungee jump from the decommissioned Orlando Power Station is a must for the more adventurous.

Historical Events Turning Major Anniversaries in 2025

1945 United Nations Charter, 80 Years

Delegates from 50 nations signed the United Nations Charter in San Francisco on June 26, 1945; it entered into force October 24, 1945. The Charter set up the General Assembly, Security Council, and International Court of Justice. UN Headquarters opened on New York’s East River in 1952. Tours require valid ID and follow airport-style screening. Flags outside the complex fly in strict alphabetical order. The 80th anniversary is a chance to read the preamble’s goals and compare them with current peacekeeping missions.

Random Thoughts…

Think about it; To survive you don't have to be faster than a bear... Just your fellow campers

Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliaphobia... Fear of long words.

If life gives you lemons, make apple juice and leave the world wondering how the heck you did it.

We should call fat people "skinny" because they typically have more skin.
