1935 Social Security Act, 90 Years

President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act on August 14, 1935, creating a federal old-age benefits system and unemployment insurance. The first monthly payments began in January 1940. Today, the Social Security Administration is headquartered in Woodlawn, Maryland, and issues annual statements that list earnings and projected benefits.
