Thoughts for the day
Lots of clouds today. Weatherman says we will have rain throughout the
weekend. Nice!
Technology can be great, or it can be awful. Lately it has been the
later. Yesterday afternoon I turned on my big screen downstairs. It stayed on
about 5 minutes then shut off. I unplugged, rebooted, several times and each
time I got about 5 minutes of TV. I
went to Best Buy for help. The Geek guy says it is a capacitor on the mother
board…and can’t be fixed. So, I bought a new TV. After unpacking and setting it
up with little success I went back to see what I was doing wrong. A Geek Squad
guy could come out for $130. The Geek Squad dropped the cost by 20%. I paid
ahead of time…as required…,went home and started over AGAIN. This time it
worked and I had TV. I went back to Best Buy to cancel my appointment. That
took them about 20 minutes with several people working on it. When I was
leaving, I got a message on my dash saying it was time to change the oil. I knew
the next time was January 2026. This morning, I went to the Nissan dealership.
The tech who changed my oil didn’t reset the warning. It’s all good now. I did
learn that you can’t buy a TV there, you have to buy a Home Theater machine.
Duh…
I had a good lunch with Andy and Faith. Oregano’s
does great food. Good conversation.

Destinations That Were Once No-Go Zones
East Berlin, Germany
After World War II, Germany was split in two by
the Soviet Union and the Western Allies. The capital of Berlin was divided into
east and west and was separated in 1961 by the notorious Berlin Wall.
Neighborhoods were divided, as, sometimes, were families. Traveling between the
two sectors soon became increasingly difficult and, in the end, impossible. The
crossing at Checkpoint Charlie was like something out of a spy novel, and more
than 600 East Germans lost their lives trying to cross the wall and escape.
Today Checkpoint Charlie is a popular attraction where tourists pose for photos
with people dressed as Soviet and American guards. There’s a McDonald's on
the corner opposite and visitors can walk freely between the two
'sectors.' Sections of the Berlin Wall remain, a somber reminder of more
restrictive times, but generally, East Berlin has embraced the freedoms and
opportunities that came when the Wall fell in 1989. Today it is home to some of
the city’s most exciting clubs, bars, and restaurants, as well as museums and
galleries.

Turning Major Anniversaries in 2025
1925 Serum Run to Nome, 100 Years
In late January 1925, mushers and dogs relayed
diphtheria antitoxin about 674 miles to Nome, Alaska, after ice halted ships.
Teams raced at night in minus 30°F wind, following Iditarod Trail posts between
roadhouses. Gunnar Kaasen’s dog Balto led the final stretch, while Leonhard
Seppala’s Togo covered the longest distance. Bronze statues in Anchorage and
New York honor the relay. Winter visitors should carry layers, hand warmers,
and avoid icy river crossings. Cold weather can numb fingers in minutes without
gloves.
Random Thoughts…
In my perfect world
mosquitoes would suck fat instead of blood.
Poems that don't rhyme are just really weird sentences that make people feel
awkward.
Sometimes I wonder if my thoughts are as big as a galaxy or as small as an
atom.
You never realize how boring your life is until someone asks you what you like
to do for fun.
