Thoughts for the day

It’s already November…can’t believe it. I’m still having great weather.

I’ve been aware of immigration since my young days. A great family friend fought in WWII, got a British girl pregnant. It took forever for the family to unite here after the war. I remember my parents attending Marjorie’s ceremony when she became an American citizen in the mid 1950’s. When I did my student teaching in Broomfield, many of my students were the children of migrant workers. Through out all that, it was obvious that the Republican Party did not like much of anything dealing with immigration. In Broomfield I heard staff discussing that no one should waste much time trying to help the migrant children, as they would be leaving when the crops had been harvested.

While many were surprised by VP Vance’s comment about legal immigrants did not surprise me…even when his wife is from an immigrant family. He suggested that there has to be a ‘common identity’ (assimilation) of the outdated melting pot theory over the ‘salad bowl’.  So sad.

When I came to Flag in the early 1970’s, the Museum Club was the go-to bar here. It was owned by a family that had ties to the mafia. It had been a museum before they bought it. They did keep some of the stuffed animals from the museum days. It was bought a few years ago but still remained a nice place for country music. Yesterday there was an auction of all the remaining items from the bar that closed last month. I wonder what will happen to the nice building.

Animals From Native American Legends And What They Symbolize

Bear ©Canva - zizar2002

Bears are powerful helpers in many tribal traditions, often called upon for healing and strength. Watching a bear's winter hibernation taught people lessons about taking time to rest and renew.

In ceremonies, the bear's spirit is used for help in healing or facing hardship. The bear's reputation for courage, survival, and profound wisdom has symbolized power and gentle care throughout Native cultures.

Boomers Were Forced to Memorize These Facts—And They’re All Useless Now…

Pluto Is the Ninth Planet in the Solar System. ©Image license via iStock

For years, teachers drilled into our heads that Pluto was the ninth planet. We had to memorize the order of the planets, and Pluto proudly sat at the end. Then, in 2006, scientists decided Pluto didn’t make the cut and demoted it to a “dwarf planet.” Just like that, all those school lessons became outdated. And while Pluto still holds a special place in our hearts, it turns out we didn’t really need to memorize it after all. (Source: Library of Congress)

Thoughts for the day

As October ends, weather is still like September. No complaints.

I had a good lunch with Andy and Faith at our favorite Mexican place. Always good food and conversation. They also had a new menu…the only change was a hefty hike in their prices, but still great food.

Trump has called for a new start to nuclear testing…forgetting about any agreements we have had with our allies or our foes. I remain shocked, as many of Trump’s changes can’t be undone, and those that can be undone when he leaves office will take decades to repair his damage.

I am glad that he has worked out a 3-year deal with China to buy the American farmers soybeans. I sure hope that holds.

Animals From Native American Legends And What They Symbolize

The landscape shapes the animals in each tribe's stories and teachings. For coastal tribes, creatures like salmon or raven feature in legends about creation or cleverness.

On the plains, buffalo and wolves are at the heart of countless tales about survival, teamwork, and abundance.

Animal stories deeply connect human communities to their homes' rhythms and cycles by reflecting what life is like in each environment.
