Thoughts for the day

Another nice fall day.

Mental illness is a serious problem in the US. I just read an article and found that Arizona is 18th and Colorado is 12th in the worst mental health states. Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota are the top 3 with the worst mental health.

I enjoyed watching Keeping up Appearances on PBS. Sadly, Dame Patricia Routledge on that show has passed at 96. RIP.

Have a great weekend.

Bucket-List Destinations That Were Once No-Go Zones

Cambodia

The Khmer Rouge only ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979, but in that short time, approximately two million people lost their lives. Their brutal leader Pol Pot declared the nation would start again at ‘Year Zero,’ emptying the cities, abolishing money, private property, and religion, and forcing everyone to work on rural collectives. Anyone considered 'intellectual' was executed, while others died of starvation, disease, and overwork when the social experiment inevitably failed. The country is littered with ‘killing fields,’ where the victims were buried in mass graves.

The regime ultimately collapsed when neighboring Vietnam invaded, establishing an occupation that would last a decade. The Vietnamese withdrew in 1989 and in the years since, Cambodia has become a popular tourist attraction, thanks particularly to the stunning Khmer ruins at Angkor Wat. Reminders remain of the terrible times under Pol Pot, including the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Memorial Stupa, both in the capital city of Phnom Penh. One of the most significant killing fields can be found at Wat Thmey near Siem Reap.

Historical Events Turning Major Anniversaries in 2025

1775 Lexington and Concord, 250 Years

On April 19, 1775, militia met British regulars at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts, starting the American Revolution. Minute Man National Historical Park marks the 5-mile Battle Road Trail between Concord and Lexington. The North Bridge site commemorates the “shot heard round the world.” Spring reenactments use black powder under strict permits, not live rounds. If you go, stay behind ropes and read fire safety signs. The 250th brings extra crowds, so arrive early and use official parking lots near visitor centers.

Random Thoughts…

I fear the day Facebook decides to inform users of who has viewed their profile...and how many times.

Before smart phones I never knew how much slime I had on my fingertips.

You can rub the inside of banana skin on mosquito bites to stop the itching.

The concept of absolutely nothing is far more mind-boggling than the concept of infinity.

Thoughts for the day

It’s a nice fall day.

I had lunch with Andy and Faith at our favorite Chinese place. Good food, great conversation.

The Dragon Bravo fire at the Grand Canyon started on July 4, 2025. Yesterday around 10AM it was labeled 100% contained. We lost most of the buildings and lodges at the North Rim, many acres of forest, hundreds…if not thousands of wildlife. I’m glad it is finally contained but remember it is still burning.

As a former Federal employee who lived through many shutdowns, I have an opinion. This shutdown is a waste of time and my tax dollars. I still remember my first shutdown when I was teaching at Tuba City. We had a school K-8 with about 900 boarding students. That day I learned that the only ‘essential’ employee at the school was the principal. That was quite a wake-up call for me.

Bucket-List Destinations That Were Once No-Go Zones

Medellin, Colombia

In 1988 Time magazine dubbed Medellin the most dangerous city in the world. It was the height of the Escobar years when the notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar used the city as the base for a cartel. Running battles with the police, political assassinations, bomb blasts, and killings were commonplace. In 1991 the homicide rate reached a staggering 381 murders per 100,000 people, almost 40 times greater than the UN's benchmark for an epidemic of violence.

Escobar died 30 years ago, and the transformation has been staggering. In 2004 a series of infrastructure projects linked the poor, isolated settlements on the steep hillsides to Medellin’s economic center. The economy came roaring back and in 2013 the city was named "the most innovative city in the world" by the Urban Land Institute. Today the city is reborn, making the most of its stunning location in a valley between two Andean mountain ridges, and tourists are discovering for themselves why Medellin is nicknamed 'the City of Eternal Spring.'

 Wrong Common Knowledge

Touching a Baby Bird Will Make Its Mother Reject It

Many people believe that if you touch a baby bird, its mother will abandon it because of the human scent. In reality, most birds have a very weak sense of smell and will continue to care for their chicks regardless. If you find a baby bird on the ground, it’s usually best to leave it alone, but if necessary, placing it back in the nest won’t cause the parents to reject it.

Random Thoughts…

Jail and prison mean the same thing, but when you add "er" to the end of them they become opposites.

If 9/11 had happened in July, Seven-Eleven would have been screwed.
That moment when your crush gets a haircut, and you realize you only liked them because of their hair.

Love is an unexplained element of life like why Silverfish aren't fish.
