Today’s Thoughts
The peaks got some snow, the town just
got much appreciated rain.
FALA (Flagstaff Arts and Leadership
Academy) has served students in grades 6-12 for almost 30 years. They were one
of the first Charter Schools in AZ. Due to their declining enrollment they met
with the District School Board and requested that they close at the end of this
term. The Board agreed. I have never been a Charter School cheerleader, but
FALA did some good work.
The Africa discussion was very good.
All seven of our members have traveled to Africa. One couple went to view their
churches work in Kenya. Another couple had taught Nursing Classes at the University
in Monrovia, Liberia for several different semesters, and the last couple had
gone to South Africa to do astronomy work. Our stories certainly were a nice walk
down memory lane. Our take-away from the articles was the US, unlike China, has
never had any long-term goals for the work we do in Africa. We believe that
more programs like the Peace Corps and Health initiatives would help the
people, instead of ways the US could get material goods like cobalt, oil, and
gas from these countries.
I’m having a hard time with the events
at the Correspondence Dinner last night. Many are saying that it really looked
staged. I was taping it, and when I turned to the live channel, I realized
something had happened. I went to the recording and watched it. CNN was on
commercial break when the ‘broken dishes’ or ‘shots’ were heard so there wasn’t
any good video right away. It should also be noted that the Secret Service
Agents who were there are not being paid, thanks to the shutdown. The whole
thing was chaotic. I was impressed with the number of journalists who were in
the ballroom and even with lousy cell service were reporting on what was
happening. I am still astounded that no one was seriously injured. I hope we
get good honest updates and that the guy remains in jail until his trial. Real
or staged, this event should be a wake up everyone that our country needs to
make some major changes. Sadly, just like all the school shootings, everyone
will simply offer prayers and hope it doesn’t happen again. I was impressed
with Trumps press conference from the White House about the events…at least
until he talked about his ballroom would have been a better venue. He and the
other staff members were measured, didn’t make any outrageous statements, and
thanked the heroes of the night…law enforcement.
How well do you know the U.S. states?
Nevada is the most mountainous state
When
people think of Nevada, they often picture either endless deserts or the
chaotic energy of Las Vegas, with its world-famous hotels and casinos. But
Nevada is a very large state (the 7th largest overall), and its 110,572 square
miles are filled with mountains.
Nevada
contains more mountain ranges than any other state in the country, over 300 of
them, thanks to the geological stretching of the Basin and Range region. These
mountain ranges create isolated valleys that serve as refuges for endemic
species.
Oregon has a lake
inside a volcano
Oregon is
home to Crater Lake, one of the many stunning natural sights in the US. It
formed inside the collapsed caldera of an ancient volcano called Mount Mazama.
No river flows in or out of the lake; the system stays stable because
evaporation is compensated by rain and snowfall.
Crater Lake is the deepest lake in America, reaching depths of nearly 2,000 feet, and its intense blue and water clarity solidify it as one of the country's most sought-after tourist destinations.

Around 20,000 Confederates fled to Brazil
As the
Confederacy crumbled in 1865, many didn't accept the defeat. Instead, around
20,000 fled to Brazil in hope that the country’s legalized slavery would
preserve their traditions. Slavery was abolished in Brazil in 1888, but to this
day descendants of the Confederates gather to celebrate their heritage.
