Today’s Thoughts

Another windy day.

Andy, Faith, and I had a nice lunch with good conversation and good food. Andy’s sister has settled into her assisted living in Flag and is very happy. This really helps Faith and Andy, knowing she is nearby and getting great care.

Does America really need a podcast run by a cabinet secretary? That’s what DHS Sec. Kennedy started yesterday. I’m surprised he has the time to do this. Then there is Greg Phillips, the top FEMA guy who told another podcast that he was transported to a Waffle House more than once. When I was working, if I had told everyone I was transported anywhere I would be looking for new employment.

The first time I remember Politics and Religion being talked about was when JFK had to make a speech that, as President, he would not be controlled by Rome. Trump making inappropriate remarks about the Pope are unacceptable. And so are his recent ‘religious memes’. Trump’s comments are not being taken well by most of America.

Strange Historical Facts

A Dead Man Won a U.S. Congressional Election

In 2000, Missouri governor Mel Carnahan died in a plane crash just weeks before the Senate election. His name remained on the ballot because there wasn’t enough time to remove it.

He won. His wife was appointed to fill the seat in his place.

It wasn’t the only time this happened — dead candidates have won elections at various levels of government across the country at different points in history.

Medieval Europeans Thought Carrots Were Purple

They were, originally. The orange carrot most people know today was cultivated in the Netherlands in the 17th century, likely through selective breeding.

Whether this was done to honor William of Orange — the Dutch royal house — is debated by historians. Purple, yellow, white, and red varieties of carrot existed long before orange became the standard.

The vegetable’s modern color is essentially a political accident.

Random historical facts you didn’t know

Roman emperor Caligula made one of his horses a senator

Known for his insanity, the emperor made his beloved horse Incitatus a senator. The horse received a marble stall, a jeweled collar, and even a house.

British tanks are equipped with tea-making facilities

Since 1945, all British tanks have a special spot for tea-making. This way, the soldiers don’t have to leave the tank in order to boil water and thereby diminish the risk of getting caught by the enemy.
