Today’s Thoughts

Today is the first Red Flag Warning this season. APS has been sending out alerts since Monday stating the high winds and fire danger; they will be working on preventing fires through a program called PSPS: Public Safety Power Shutoffs. This morning around 9am they have turned off the power to many East of Flagstaff city limits. The power outage could be from a couple of hours to 24 hours, depending on the issues they find. I live right on the city border, and my place is not affected. I called Andy and his place is without power. I told him I was glad he had solar backup. For some reason, the backup didn’t work so they are without power. He also has ‘big wind’ so there’s that too.

Someone needs to inform the President that day-to-day politics is much like finding out how sausage is made. Very few, if any, want to see it daily.

I have my annual Medicare physical tomorrow. I am hoping that he can give me a remedy for the thin, easily bruised skin on my hands. About 90% if the time the bruises just show up and I have no idea why. I was showering the other day and accidentally forgot to dab the bruise while I was showering. I simply scrubbed it like the rest of my body. I tore off the thin tissue layer of skin on the bruise, followed by some bleeding. I finished my shower, cleaned the wound, and used liquid bandage to stop the bleeding. It’s not a big deal, just frustrating.

How well do you know the U.S. states?

Arizona is home to one of the best-preserved meteor craters

Arizona’s desert landscape holds one of the most famous impact sites on Earth: Meteor Crater. This massive depression, measuring about 3,900 feet across and more than 500 feet deep, was formed around 50,000 years ago when a large iron meteorite struck the ground with unimaginable force. It’s so well preserved that scientists have used it to study planetary impacts for decades.
Colorado contains the highest paved road in North America.

California has the tallest, largest, and oldest trees

California is home to some incredible tree-based records. On the northern coast, redwoods grow routinely over 300 feet and represent the tallest tree species on Earth. In addition, giant sequoias hold the record for the largest trees by volume, and bristlecone pines in eastern California are among the oldest living trees on the planet, some reaching more than 4,800 years of age.

George Washington opened a whiskey distillery

After his presidency, Washington opened a whiskey distillery. By 1799 it was the largest distillery in the United States, producing 11,000 gallons of un-aged whiskey.

An all-black regiment called the Harlem Hellfighters fought during World War I

The 369th New York regiment fought longer than any other unit during the war. Sadly, although many Hellfighters hoped that their service would improve race relations, they returned home to find racist Jim Crow laws still in place.
