Today’s Thoughts

The weather is great; just wish it was a tad warmer.

There are good rich people in this world. NPR recently received 2 huge donations after the government funding was canceled. The two combined gave NPR $113million. As a sustaining member of KNAU, our local NPR station, I appreciate their generosity.

This morning I got my quarterly Lupron shot to control my prostate cancer. It is working great and there are no side effects.

Almost everyone believes that Congress is not doing a great job. Important bills are not being passed, important programs for Americans are not being funded. Last week 2 Representatives resigned over bad behavior while holding office and to prevent being expelled from Congress. Several more Reps are still under investigation. In our 250-year history, only 2 Reps have been expelled from the House…back during the Civil War. I learned today, thanks to NPR, that any elected Congress person receives a very nice pension…if they have met minimum years of service…when they do retire. If they are expelled, they do not get the pension. If they resign, they will receive their pension…even if they are found guilty of committing a crime during their elected term. This is so wrong. Congress needs to clean up their pension rules.

I believe it is time for Congress and America to review the role of the President as written in the Constitution. 1. The president is the Commander in Chief. 2. Notify Congress (now the State of the Union Speech) periodically. 3. Ensure laws are faithfully executed. 4. Has the power to sign or veto legislation. In 2026, which power is our current President using when he builds the ballroom and now the Arch? Which power is he using when he posts blasphemous statements regarding the current Pope?

Strange Historical Fact

Ancient Spartan Boys Trained to Steal but Punished When Caught

Boys in Sparta’s tough training program learned early how to sneak meals without getting caught. This trick taught them to think fast while depending only on themselves.

Yet capture brought consequences – not because taking food broke rules, but for failing to stay hidden. A tale told by Plutarch speaks of one youth who carried a stolen fox beneath his robe.

Even as its claws tore into him, silence held firm. Truth or stretched detail, the moment shows exactly what that harsh mindset valued.

Random historical facts you didn’t know

The Leaning Tower of Pisa was never straight

Known for its four-degree lean, the Italian tower was constructed in the 12th century. When construction on the second story started, the tower started to lean, due to the unstable ground.

Alexander Fleming invented penicillin by accident

When Scottish biologist Alexander Fleming left for vacation in 1928, he forgot to properly clean one of his Petri dishes. When he came back, he noticed mold on it and figured that it had prevented bacteria from growing. He understood that the mold contained antibacterial properties, thus discovering penicillin.

Rasputin survived many assassination attempts

Russian mystic and friend to Czar Nicolas II, Rasputin survived being poisoned, shot, and stabbed numerous times before he was drowned in the Volga River.
