Thoughts for the day

Day 40 of the current shutdown.

I had a nice visit with Laurie Eckhardt this morning. She is doing well as are her two grown kids with their families. Chris, her son, had to have an operation to put a permanent tube in his brain to drain fluid to his gut. It was a little frightening but he is doing very well a couple of months after the procedure. Laurie wanted some help with a new website she is making for her late husband’s artwork. I was able to offer some help in the decision making process.

I read an interesting article on the difference between unemployment and functionally unemployed. The rate we see in the news is the former, currently about 4%. (Interestingly, if you work 2 hours in a month for pay, you are considered employed for this government data.) The latter is people who are unable to find full-time work, and that figure is about 25%.

Animals From Native American Legends And What They Symbolize

Thunderbird

The thunderbird is a mighty spirit bird known for its massive wings and storms. In tribal legend, the thunderbird controls thunder and lightning, defeats monsters, or brings needed rain.

People see thunderbirds as protectors during times of crisis and respect their power as a reminder that nature's strongest forces deserve humility and awe.

Carvings, dances, and stories celebrate the thunderbird's energy and its role in restoring order.

Boomers Were Forced to Memorize These Facts—And They’re All Useless Now…

There Are Four Oceans in the World

We had to memorize the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic Oceans as the four official ones. Then, out of nowhere, scientists decided to add a fifth—the Southern Ocean. While it makes sense from a geographical and scientific perspective, it made all those school quizzes instantly outdated. If only we had known back then that even something as massive as an ocean could be subject to change.

Random Thoughts

Every broken clock tells you the exact time it passed away.

Most people pull their phones out of their pockets to check the time. We are reverting to the era of pocket watches.

When you give someone food, you’re feeding them. But when you give them water, you aren’t watering them.

We’ll never really know what it smells like underwater.
