Thoughts for
the day
It rained during the night and continued until about 10a. Then it was
clear sky but more clouds are coming over the mountain. By 1pm, the clouds were
back and the rain started again. The rain has been great for our parched forest.
I learned so much about Navajo culture when I lived there for over 3
decades. I learned about the big celebration when someone makes a new baby
laugh for the first time. I learned the rituals that are followed during an
eclipse. I had never heard of any stories about the Northern Lights. I assumed,
wrongly, that it was because they rarely appear this far south. I talked to
Andy about it. He sent me a video regarding the Northern Lights, as he didn’t
know of any procedures either. Of course, there are stories and traditions. Unfortunately,
they are being lost as traditional medicine men are few and far between today.
So here is the story from a traditional Navajo: When the sky has those green or
other colored lights over Navajo, they are warning that something bad is going
to happen soon. They suggest that anyone seeing the lights should have a protection
prayer done. The story that he remembered included the Northern lights being
seen around 1917-18 on Navajo land and soon there was the Spanish Flu. Again,
they were seen just before COVID. The medicine man is still talking to other
medicine men to find more stories about the Northern Lights. I find the Navajo
Culture fascinating.
Greed has been in my life forever. I remember when stores were always
closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and a few other Federal Holidays. I also remember
when stores were not open on Sunday, the Christian sabbath. Many store owners wanted
to serve people every day. They shouted ‘convenience’ but I now see it was actually
greed…a way to get more money in their pockets. This, to me, was the beginning
of the current billionaire class running the country. They seem to believe that
the more money you have, the more you are seen as a successful person. During
the current economic turmoil, I think it is the end of the billionaire class
running everything. They haven’t done a good job.
History that is not true…
Great Britain stood alone against
the Nazis
Between the surrender of France
in 1940 and Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, Britain technically
stood alone against the Nazis – but the word 'alone' is so misleading
it might as well be false. At that time the British Empire covered nearly
a quarter of the globe, and a mixture of carrot and stick saw men and
munitions pour in from Canada, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and
beyond. India mobilized two and half million soldiers, the largest
volunteer army ever assembled, while a thousand men from the Cayman
Islands joined the Royal Navy – equivalent to roughly two-thirds of
the adult male population.
With Nazi strategists readying invasion plans and the Luftwaffe
raining fire on London, the British people must have felt very
isolated. Winston Churchill’s wartime speeches certainly drew on this spirit of
gutsy defiance – "we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may
be" – and for a few months the situation looked grim. But the popular
image of Britain as a plucky David standing alone against the Nazi Goliath was
never accurate – even in its darkest hours.
Myths people still believe about
Native Americans…
Native Americans are all the same
The U.S. has 574
federally recognized tribes, each with its own unique languages, traditions, and governing systems.
It is like saying that all Europeans are the same since they occupy one
continent. The Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma differs from the Inupiat in
Alaska and the Navajo Nation in the Southwest.
Some tribes were agricultural societies,
including the city-states, while others were nomadic hunters. The Haudenosaunee
(Iroquois) managed to create a democratic system that had an impact on the U.S.
Constitution.
In North America, there were more than 300
Native languages before contact with Europeans. Approximately 175 languages are
still alive today, but many of them are endangered. Both are distinct views,
which are often challenging to convert into English.

Someone
studying atoms is just a bunch of atoms trying to understand themselves.
Every
single human in history has witnessed the same sun and moon as you have.
You’ve
never seen your own face before—only in pictures and reflections.
