Thoughts for the day

It’s another very nice fall day. I am awaiting the delivery of some meds before I go out grocery shopping. The delivery requires my signature, and FedEx only says the delivery will be between 8a and 1:30pm. Not complaining because the meds are free, thanks to my insurance. The moderate air quality is due to the seemingly never-ending prescribed burns. No smoke yet.

I have had complaints about the HOA here. About 6 months ago they said they would no longer clean our gutters of the pine needles from the many trees on the property. When the gutter is full of needles, the water from rain overflows onto the wood fascia. I’ve had to call the landlord and wait until he finds someone to clean the gutter. The HOA must have hired a different company to care for the site. This is the 3rd day in a row they have been clearing pine needles from the units and the street we drive on. This morning, they were on our roof at 7:30am, blowing off pine needles, then they brought out ladders and 4 men to clear the gutters. They have done an amazing job.

Trump has many National Guard in various cities to deal with immigration. Most of them have been stopped as the administration awaits the Supreme Court decision on their value. In the meantime, they sit in barracks in various states exercising or playing games outside. A few are picking up trash in various cities. When I was at Navajo Mountain, one of my employees was in the National Guard. He had to report for training each summer for three weeks. He was put on Admin Leave, got his regular paycheck, plus any money the Guard paid him in per diem for his training. I had to adjust schedules for this to work and did it with no problems. The active-duty guard also have jobs at home that need to be covered. Not all bosses are as understanding bout this duty as the US Government. We as taxpayers are paying for these Guard who are deployed to American cities. The government says it costs us about $650/day for each soldier. This just seems like a waste of taxpayer money.

History that is not true…

President Kennedy told a crowd he was a jelly donut

In 1963, President John F Kennedy gave one of his best-known speeches  outside the Rathaus Schoneberg in West Berlin – a direct response to the building of the Berlin Wall and the escalating tensions of the Cold War. Addressing the crowd with his usual solemn dignity, Kennedy ingratiated himself by declaring, in German, "Ich bin ein Berliner" – "I am a Berliner". At which point, the story goes, the crowd tittered, because Kennedy’s language skills did not match his statecraft. He had not said "I am a Berliner". He had said "I am a jelly donut".
We wish it were true – we really do – but this fun little anecdote is based on a false premise. A Berliner is indeed a type of donut-esque pastry, but the story rests on the idea that Kennedy’s inclusion of the article 'ein' changed the statement’s meaning. The problem is that it just... doesn’t. That is not how the German language works. The word 'Berliner' – the donut, that is – was also not in general use in Berlin at that time. Ah well, it was fun while it lasted.

Boomers Were Forced to Memorize These Facts—And They’re All Useless Now…

The Forbidden City in China Got Its Name Because No One Could Enter

This one made it sound like some ancient, off-limits fortress that no human ever stepped inside. In reality the Forbidden City was home to Chinese emperors and their courts, and while access was restricted, it wasn’t completely off-limits. The name comes from a translation of a Chinese phrase that means “Purple Forbidden City,” referring to its connection to the heavens. But we all memorized the incorrect, dramatic version instead!
