Today’s Reflection:
The monsoon has returned in full swing. Earlier today there was
sunshine and thunder, then the dark clouds moved in. Around noon the clouds
opened and drenched the forest for about 30 minutes. Thunder and lightning
continued and the lightning has been close.
Several areasd of France and Spain are suffering from wildfires. I
have visited many of those areas. Now over 250,000 people have been evacuated.
It is so sad.
In the months before my hospitalization, my skin was very dry. I’m
now blaming that on the meds I was taking. I have lived in the desert environment
for decades, but in those months, I had to put lots of lotion on my arms, legs,
and back. I also had a lot of itching so used cream several times a day to stop
the itching. Now that I am off the high dose meds, my skin has become much
better. The only time I use lotion is after my shower. The itching is gone.
Looking back, I should have told the medical people about the dry skin, which
must have been early dehydration. So glad I have learned a good lesson about
dry skin. In addition, my arms were bruising very easily. I decided that it was
old age. Well, since my skin is back to a better moist condition, the bruising
has almost disappeared with no new bruises appearing. It’s all good.
More and more educators are warning about the downside to the use
of screens for teaching basics. It seems that students are spending too much
time on a screen, rather than in a book or listening to a teacher. This is now
affecting their social interactions with other students and the school personnel.
While screens have benefits, it is time to look at the downside of their
influence on our youth.

SMASH
Etymologically, smash was
probably originally onomatopoeic, and in relation to a noisy crashing
together likely dates back to the late 1600s. In the more
figurative sense of a resounding success, though, the first "smash
hits" were two Broadway productions, The Fool and The
Rise of Rosie O'Reilly, that were so labelled by Variety magazine
back in 1923.
Oddly,
before then, a cultural smash was the complete opposite:
the Oxford English Dictionary has unearthed a handful of evidence of the word being used
in relation to a crushing commercial failure (more akin to a market crash,
rather than a breakout smash) from as early as 1839.
Today in Science:
Humanity might once have
spoken many more languages than it does today, with tens of thousands in use
between 3,000 and 1,000 years ago. This far exceeds the more than 7,500 unique
languages now used worldwide.
The findings, published
on 23 July in Science1, suggest that the rise of
agriculture spurred an initial language boom as people shifted from a nomadic,
hunter-gatherer lifestyle and settled into small, isolated communities. If
accurate, these results suggest that language extinction is not a uniquely
modern phenomenon, says Heidi Harley, a linguist at the University of Arizona
in Tucson.
The true historical diversity of languages suggested by this analysis is “mind-blowing”, she says. “The sheer number of languages that they projected to have existed is like, ‘What? That’s crazy’.” To learn more click on this link: Click here.
