Today’s Thoughts

The forecast shows no precipitation in the next few days. Hopefully it will warm up.

Our discussion group was excellent. It was held at The Bluffs, a luxury retirement facility about 5 miles from my place. John, our presenter, has a very nice one-bedroom unit with lots of space, great views of the peaks, and a small deck. Nine of us sat comfortably in his living room. Everyone participated in a lively discussion. I learned a lot. Part of the discussion revolved around our Tech Rivalry: In 5G telephones, China leads US in 8/12 of the areas; in Quantum science China leads in 5/7; The US leads in semiconductors 4-7; in Green Energy China leads in 18/20. In some of the subcategories, China got its edge through buying, or stealing Western technology. As with most technology, the US has a bad track record on stopping theft and intrusions from bad actors, firewalls, and all security aspects. Part of that problem is that the US seems to place innovation over security. Just look at how easy it is for hackers to infiltrate our social media. If the US wants to improve its ranking, it first must increase R&D money to stop hackers. Many tech companies seem to believe the dollar is more important than security, and in a free society leaves security up to the individual users to figure it out. Ads produce most of the revenue and they figure ‘buyer beware’ is all they need to do.

Did you Know?

Fact: The circulatory system is more than 60,000 miles long

If a child’s entire circulatory system—we’re talking veins, arteries, and capillaries—were laid out flat, it would stretch for more than 60,000 miles, according to the Franklin Institute. By the time we reach adulthood, our bodies have become home to approximately 100,000 miles of blood vessels. That’s just one of the mind-blowing facts that sound made up (but aren’t).
