Today’s Quote                                                        Today’s Meme

"To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment."

— Ralph Waldo Emerson

Today’s Thoughts

Nice, warm spring day. Weather guy sez it will be like this through the weekend.

There were two small wildfires near Flagstaff yesterday. Both were quickly contained, and no structures were in danger.

When I was in the BIA, one of our missions was to prepare students to choose which world they would live in…traditional or modern world.  Here is an example of the 2024 result of that mission. I was talking to a former student after the eclipse. Navajo tradition is to stay inside, fast, and pray during the eclipse. My student works in Sedona as a welder. In preparation for the eclipse, he saw a medicine man and paid for a prayer. On the day of the eclipse, he prayed, covered up and went to work. After the eclipse he ended his fast. The next day the medicine man was paid for another prayer. It works for him, so it works for me.

Terms with origins in rural America

Have a conniption

To "have a conniption" is to throw a fit or tantrum. It comes from the South, where some think it's a version of the word corruption, as in someone being corrupted by the devil.

Did you Know?

Native Cultures

Native Americans Use Earthen Ovens For Cooking

A vast number of Native Americans rely on earthen ovens for cooking purposes. This is not the traditional method used in most U.S. households, which explains why many people may not even know such a method exists.

In addition to having a minimal impact on the environment, this cooking method plays a key role in developing cultural awareness and celebrating the diversity of culinary practices used by the different Native American cultures. Using earthen ovens also makes it easier for Native Americans to continue preserving their family traditions generation after generation.
