Today’s Thoughts
A breezy spring day.
Lots of sunshine.
At my dental
cleaning, all went well.
Yesterday, after the
eclipse, at dusk there was a light snowfall. Just enough to wet the streets and
leave dirt on the windshield.
This morning, the
judge sentenced the parents of a school shooter to 10-15 years in prison. It
seems harsh, but may wake up parents to the dangers of keeping weapons
available to juviniles.
Yesterday was my
traveling buddy Ed’s birthday. Hope he had a great day.
Terms with origins in rural America
Madder than a wet hen
To be
"madder than a wet hen" is to be extremely angry. It's rooted in the
old-time practice of Southern farmers to dunk brooding, quarrelsome hens in
cold water so they could collect their eggs.
Did you Know?
Native Cultures
Many
Popular American Inventions Have Native American Origins
Just
because you assume something originated with a specific culture does not mean
that is the case. That is yet another reason why research is so important. This
is the case with quite a few different American inventions and tools that are
used today. It may surprise you just how many of those inventions have Native
American roots.
For
instance, quite a few pottery-making techniques and tools originated within
Native American culture. There is also the development of canoes, moccasins,
and snow goggles that connect back to the indigenous peoples.
