Today’s Quote                                                         Today’s Meme

Today’s Thoughts

The day started with a clear blue sky, but by 10AM many clouds were in the sky. No moisture in the forecast.

I think I’ll start thinking about some spring cleaning later in the month. I’ve got to be prepared for the event that will take several days.

Terms with origins in rural America

No dice

"No dice" means no deal or no result. It comes from states where gambling was illegal in the early 1900s. Gamblers would hide the dice if they were caught, and courts would toss out gambling cases if no dice were found.

Influential Women

Phyllis Schlafly (1924-2016). Schlafly was a constitutional lawyer and conservative political activist. She is best known for her critiques of radical feminism and her successful campaign against ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution. (Recommended biography here.)

Muriel F. Siebert (1928-2013). Known as “the first woman of finance,” Siebert was the first woman to head a firm traded on the New York Stock Exchange. (Recommended biography here.)

Historical Myths many believe…

Vikings Were Bloodthirsty Raiders

While Vikings did engage in violent raids, pillaging foreign settlements, that is only part of the story. History shows they were also skilled traders, artisans, and seafarers who established extensive trade networks, founded farming settlements, and engaged in cultural exchanges, sharing knowledge, traditions, songs, and stories.

Influential Native Americans…

Lila Downs

Lila Downs has always felt pulled between her cultures. The artist grew up in two worlds, Minnesota and Oaxaca, Mexico, and is also Indigenous Mixtec, making her a tricultural creative. Her multifaceted heritage shines through in her entertaining and inspiring music, and she uses her songs to tell stories of her people. Inspired by these stories, her song "Dark Eyes'' is about the labor Indigenous communities often take on, which is often deemed "essential" yet overlooked.

Historic Events

1913 – 20,000 homes were destroyed, and over 360 people were killed in the Great Dayton Flood in Dayton, Ohio.

1965 – 3,000 civil rights demonstrators participated in the walk from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.

1970 – The first Earth Day proclamation is issued by Joseph Alioto, Mayor of San Francisco.

@72 – John D. Rockefeller III, American philanthropist (d. 1978; auto accident)
