Today’s Quote                                                         Today’s Meme

Today’s Thoughts

Snowing all day. About 2” sticking. Not nearly as much as Colorado.

I’m not complaining about the snow, we need the moisture here. It is an inconvenience, but Colorado is getting dumped on. I hope my friends up there are well prepared. Our HOA crew seldom show up while it is snowing, but when it stops, they are usually pretty good about clearing the sidewalks and driveway. I don’t have anywhere I have to go, so it’s all OK.

Terms with origins in rural America

Acid test

The term "acid test" dates to the gold rush in the mid-1800s, when acid was used to check the purity of gold. The test involved using nitric acid, which has the ability to dissolve every metal but gold. The term became a pun in the 1960s when it was used to refer to LSD parties hosted by author Ken Kesey.

Influential Women

Harriet Jacobs (1813-1897). Jacobs, a writer, escaped slavery and later was freed. She published a novel, “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl,” credited as the first to highlight the struggles of rape and sexual abuse within slavery. (Recommended biography here.)

America’s Top Attractions

1980s: Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park, Atlanta, Georgia

The Martin Luther King Jr. Historic District in Atlanta was authorized as a national historic site in 1980. It contained a memorial tomb and several buildings key to the civil rights leader’s life, including his childhood home and Ebenezer Baptist Church (pictured) where he was baptized and where both he and his father were pastors. The site became a National Historical Park in 2018.

Epcot, Walt Disney World Resort, Orlando, Florida

After Disney’s arrival in Florida proved to be a roaring success, Epcot (then Epcot Center) opened in 1982. The theme park, whose name stands for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, was initially intended to be a city where people would live and work. However, since Walt Disney died before his vision was realized, the site was turned into a glittering amusement park instead. It was the second of four theme parks to be built at Walt Disney World Resort.

Influential Native Americans…

Charlene Teters

For many years, artist, educator, and activist Charlene Teters has been committed to removing Indigenous cultural appropriation in the state of Illinois. A member of the Spokane tribe and former Academic Dean of the Institute of American Indian Arts, Teters is a powerful and creative voice in the movement for change. Decades after she protested the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign's mascot, Chief Illiniwek, the school finally removed the mascot. The fight against appropriated mascots, however, is not over yet.

Historic Events

1802 – The Army Corps of Engineers was established to found and operate the Military Academy at West Point.

1926 – Robert Goddard launched the first liquid-fueled rocket in Auburn, MA.

1968 – The My Lai Massacre involved the killing of 3000 noncombatant Vietnam citizens.

1995 – Mississippi formally ratified the Thirteenth Amendment, becoming the last state to approve the abolition of slavery.

2020 – The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 2,997.10, the single largest point drop in history and the second-largest percentage drop ever, at 12.93%.

The Thirteenth Amendment was officially ratified in 1865.

Birthdays with some quotes

@91 – Jerry Lewis, American actor and comedian (d. 2017)

“I have a loyalty that runs in my bloodstream, when I lock into someone or something, you can’t get me away from it because I commit that thoroughly. That’s in friendship, that’s a deal, that’s a commitment. Don’t give me paper – I can get the same lawyer who drew it up to break it. But if you shake my hand, that’s for life.”

@91 – Henny Youngman, English-American violinist and comedian (d. 1998)

“I told the doctor I broke my leg in two places. He told me to stop going to those places.”

@87 – Mercedes McCambridge, American actress (d. 2004)

@85 – James Madison, 4th President (d. 1836)

83 – Chuck Woolery, American game show host and television personality

75 – Erik Estrada, American actor

“Respect other people regardless of the level they are at… or the level you are at. When you hand out respect, you get it back.”

@72 – Conrad Nagel, American actor (d. 1970; heart attack)

70 – Nancy Wilson, American singer-songwriter, Heart

@67 – Josef Mengele, evil German physician (d. 1979; stroke)

“As a child, I loved fantasy books, I loved Harry Potter and the idea that there is something ‘out there’ is inspiring to kids and inspiring to me. It’s exciting and I think people can relate to it. Even if things are difficult or bad for you, the idea that there is something special within you is positive and true.”

…The End for today…
