Today’s Thoughts

Welcoming 2024. Today is cloudy.

One of my colleagues from Tuba is part of our retirement lunch group. She lives in Williams. Her son, also a friend, lives in California. She had another fall in early November and her son insisted she stay with him and his family to recover. She is still there and well healed. She is 76 and doesn’t want to waste money on knee replacement. Her son is worried about another fall. They are ‘discussing’ where she will live. She never answers her cell phone. Her son messaged me this morning and caught me up. I called the son’s home, and she was there. We had a nice conversation. Personally, I think she should stay in CA as she really can’t risk another fall. She has had many falls that I know about while she was living in Williams. Only time will tell her destination.

My resolution for this new year is to not to read or listen to American politics until there is a final official ballot. I’m fed up with our current Presidential and Congressional politics. I am only ONE vote and can’t use it until November.

 Enjoy

Important inventions…

1964: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Widespread use of remotely piloted aircraft begins during the Vietnam War with deployment of 1000 AQM-34 Ryan Firebees. The first model of these 29-foot-long planes was developed in just 90 days in 1962. AQM-34s go on to fly more than 34,000 surveillance missions. Their success leads to the eventual development of the UAVs widely used today.

Honorable Invention: Music Synthesizer

Today’s Thoughts

I had a tele-med visit with my Kidney Dr. All good.

Getting ready to say goodbye to 2023. I will not be sad to see it go. I had a series of non-serious medical issues that I am glad to leave behind. I’m doing well now. It seemed that every few weeks brought on another medical issue that I had never had before. Each was corrected…after many tests to rule out more serious conditions. I’m ready to welcome 2024. I’ll be staying home and watch the ball drop on East Coast time and be rested to greet the new year on Jan. 1 about 6am.

I had to say goodbye to way too many friends and colleagues after years of friendship. Most passed after only slight suffering. For that I am grateful.

Important inventions…

1962: Communications Satellite

Telstar is launched as the first “active” communications satellite—active as in amplifying and retransmitting incoming signals, rather than passively bouncing them back to Earth. Telstar makes real a 1945 concept by science-fiction author Arthur C. Clarke, who envisioned a global communications network based on geosynchronous satellites. Two weeks after Telstar’s debut, President Kennedy holds a press conference in Washington, D.C., that is broadcast live across the Atlantic.

Honorable Inventions: Computer Mouse, LED, Video Games

1963: Sketchpad program

Ivan Sutherland—The Father of Computer Graphics—revolutionized 3D computer modeling and simulation when he created the Sketchpad program. As the earliest iteration of a computer-aided design (CAD) program, Sketchpad pioneered the use of geometric constraints (fixing the length of a line or an angle between two segments). It was also one of the first programs to use a graphical user interface, as opposed to a text-based one—if you’re reading this on a computer without knowing a single line of code, you can thank Sutherland and Sketchpad.

4. Montana – Japan

Montana is the fourth-biggest state in the Union, covering an area of 147,040 square miles. This closely aligns with the archipelagic nation of Japan, which covers 145,936 square miles. In terms of population, Montana ranks among the nation’s 10 least populated states, with approximately 1.1 million residents. Its population is significantly smaller than the 124.2 million people who call Japan home, which makes Japan the 11th-most populous country in the world. Montana’s most populous city is Billings (118,000 residents), though its capital city is Helena (population: 35,000). Tokyo, the capital of Japan, is the world’s most populous city — with over 37 million living in its metro area.

Historic Events

The first word most people say every year is “happy.”

1600 – The British East India Company was chartered. At one point it had a hand in 50% of the whole world’s trade and business.

1907 – The first New Year’s Eve celebration was held in Times Square (then known as Longacre Square) in Manhattan.

1983 – the United States Government broke up AT&T ‘Ma Bell’ telephone system monopoly.
