Today’s Thoughts

Nice day…blue sky, warm temps.

Sen. McConnell is stepping down after the 2024 election day. He is 82 recognizes that he is not a young man anymore. He says he will finish his time in the senate and not run for reelection. I don’t agree with many of his political views but respect him for this decision. He is the longest serving Senator and I must wonder who the next leader of the Republican Party in the Senate will be.

The Supreme Court has accepted a case that puts other Trump Federal cases on hold. The election clock is ticking. This acceptance of a case could cause problems for everyone in the Nov. election. I will stay alert as this plays out.

Denver has received 16,000 illegal border crossers as Texas has sent them to Denver. Two cities, Aurora and Colorado Springs have passed resolutions that they will not accept any of them if Denver sends them their way because neither has the resources to help these human beings. Interesting morally and difficult to enforce. Time will tell how this works out.

UNESCO sites in America…

Half (12) of the UNESCO sites in the US are cultural, and half are natural. There's also a mixed one, to round the number up to 25.

Technically, eight different sites fall under this category. The famous architectural feats of Frank Lloyd Wright were turned into heritage sites in 2019. The locations are:

Fallingwater in Pennsylvania

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York

Unity Temple in Illinois

Taliesin West in Arizona

The Frederick C. Robie House in Illinois

The Hollyhock House in California

The Herbert and Katherine Jacobs House in Wisconsin.

1920s: The Museum of Modern Art, New York City, New York

The hugely influential modern art gallery first opened its doors on 7 November 1929. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) was conceived by three progressive and influential art patrons, Miss Lillie P Bliss, Mrs Cornelius J Sullivan and Mrs John D Rockefeller. It was the first institution devoted exclusively to modern art and the first in Manhattan to exhibit European modernism. Over the next 10 years its location moved three times before opening in its current Midtown building in 1939.

Where The Mohawk Hairstyle Comes From

The Mohawk hairstyle can still be seen today, but some may not know the origins of this unique hairdo.

It is modeled after the Mohawk tribe where the men would keep one part of their head cleanly shaven and paint the other side a bright color. The name "Mohawk" translates to "man-eaters."

Today’s Thoughts

It’s Leap Day so our calendar continues to work.

On the 28th, I got an early morning call from my brother to wish me a happy birthday. I had a nice lunch with friends. I got many wishes from my friends and former colleagues on Facebook. It was a great day overall.

Dynamic Pricing has been around for decades. The AZ electricity supplier charges more per kw hour during peak periods and less during low periods. Airlines and others have raised fares during peak holiday periods. Since I started coming to Flagstaff, motels charged less during the winter than during the summer. Now some businesses are starting Dynamic Pricing where certain high demand items are more expensive during certain hours and 15-20% less at other times of the day. The complaint from consumers is that during certain business hours prices are raised while the regular price remains at other times of the day. It seems it will simply cause consumers to lose. Here is a scenario: during peak shopping time, say 4:30-6:30p a loaf of bread costs 20%more. The shopper starts shopping at 4:00pm but doesn’t check out until 4:31, the cash register will charge the higher price. This is insane.

UNESCO sites in America…

Everglades National Park

Located in Florida, this national park encompasses over 1.5 million acres. It's been a site since 1979. The park is home to many endangered species such as the American crocodile, manatee, and the Florida panther.

America’s Top Attractions

1920s: Hollywood Sign, Los Angeles, California

Erected in 1923 as a temporary advertisement for a real estate development, the Hollywood sign is now one of the most famous in the world. It originally read Hollywoodland but the “land” was removed when it was restored in 1949. The landmark, which sits on the southern side of Mount Lee in Griffith Park, officially became a historic monument in the 1970s (pictured here) and the deteriorating structure was restored once again in 1978 on the back of a campaign led by Playboy founder Hugh Hefner.

Historical Facts about Native Americans…

Native To America Since 12,000 B.C.

Historians found that Native Americans have lived in the United States since 12,000 B.C. after traveling a path from Asia to Alaska.

There is not one single nation, but instead groups of people with different cultures, languages, and more. There is also some evidence that Indigenous people have lived in South America as far back as 30,000 years ago.

Historic Events

46 BC – Julius Caesar declared the first Leap Day.

The odds of being born on February 29th are 1 in 1,461.

365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds is how long it takes for the Earth to go around the Sun.

1288 – The concept of allowing women to propose marriage to men may have begun, in Scotland, with five-year-old Queen Margaret of Scotland.
