Today’s Thoughts

I woke up to clear sky but by 8:00am it was overcast again. No moisture in forecast until late Tuesday.

Snow is melting.

Health Insurance is driving me batty. I called this morning to renew a script I have had for about 3 years. AS of Jan. 1 of this year my script is no longer covered by BC with Medicare. I was paying $40 for 90 days, now I get to deal with Medicare to find what alternatives they suggest. I recall, from the early 1980’s when my dad got a check from Medicare for overpayment of $32.70. As an accountant he kept exceptional records. He called, wrote to, and even visited a Medicare office to show them that the check was wrong and then that it was their money. He never cashed the check and when he passed, it was still sitting there in his Medicare records folder.

Weird History…

President Andrew Jackson Owned A Swearing Parrot That Attended His Funeral

President Andrew Jackson was a man of many talents, and his pet parrot Poll was no exception! A beloved companion to the 7th President of the United States, Polly was known for her colorful language and even attended Jackson's funeral in 1845. As a testament to their close bond, it is said that when Poll died two years later, she was buried alongside her owner at The Hermitage - Jackson’s home in Tennessee. While it may seem like something out of a fairy tale, this incredible story is true, proving that sometimes truth really can be stranger than fiction!

Civil War Facts

The Conscription Act of 1863 establishes a national draft

All nondisabled men between the ages of 20 and 45, citizen and immigrant alike, were conscripted to the Union Army by the Conscription Act of 1863. The act was considered unfair to people experiencing poverty, as service could be eluded by paying a fee or finding a volunteer substitute to take one's place. Violent protest riots erupted in New York City in July 1863, leaving at least 120 people dead (some accounts report a death toll of as many as 1,000). A parallel conscription act was approved in the Confederacy, prompting a similar uproar.
