Today’s Thoughts

A decent winter day. Not much wind, nice sunshine.

I try to watch various 24-hour news channels for a little time each day. I am so disappointed at the Right wing news that were bashing Biden for his speech to the Nation. It continues to be that anyone against Trump is the devil-incarnate. I thought our country would outgrow this pre-teen and teenage silliness. I believe it is all jealousy.

I am getting anxious for spring with warm days and nice evenings that are filled with more happiness.

Terms with origins in rural America

Piece of cake

In the 19th century, it was common to award cakes to winners at competitions, hence the idea of something being a "piece of cake."  "Cakewalk," which has a similar meaning, was actually the name of a dance competition. Plantation owners in the pre-Civil War South served as judges at cakewalks, wherein enslaved people went through a series of complicated dance moves that were most likely done in mockery of the plantation owners.

America’s Top Attractions

1960s: Space Needle, Seattle, Washington

Seattle’s futuristic landmark, the Space Needle, officially opened to the public on 21 April 1962. It was built as part of the Century 21 Exhibition, a space-age themed World Fair. During the event, more than 20,000 people used the elevator to reach its summit each day, drawing more than 2.3 million visitors overall. Usually around 1.3 million people now visit the 600-foot-tall structure each year.

Gateway Arch, St Louis, Missouri

Sat by the banks of the Mississippi River in St Louis, the high and elegant Gateway Arch was completed in 1965. It was part of the Jefferson National Expansion and takes its name from the city’s role as the “Gateway to the West” during the westward expansion of the US in the 19th century. At 630 feet, it’s the tallest monument in the United States and the tallest arch in the world. And it’s arguably the Midwest’s most recognizable landmark.

Influential Native Americans…

Maria Tallchief

Maria Tallchief moved to New York to achieve her dream of becoming a dancer at just 17 years old. However, many of the companies she approached turned her away because of her Osage Nation heritage. Her drive and determination against all odds, even refusing to change her last name, led her to become one of America's most revered ballerinas. Tallchief was the first American to perform at the Paris Opera Ballet, and she and her sister Marjorie went on to found the Chicago City Ballet.
