Thoughts for the day

This post is for Sunday. I goofed up yesterday. Sorry.

Another nice fall day, just a little breezy.

I’ve started laying stuff out for packing for my week in Mexico. Getting excited for sure.

Hoping everyone enjoys the nice long weekend. I’ll be flying on Monday so I know I will be enjoying Indigenous People’s Day.

Living in a swing state, today’s political fund raising reminds me of the old TV telethons. Every time they want money, they are just a little short of the goal. That thermometer device moves just a little. They push hard to get more donations. Still it just moves a little. Then as the real final deadline gets closer, the thermometer moves much quicker, and as the broadcast ends, suddenly they reach their earlier goal and thank everyone.

The band Aerosmith made more money on Guitar Hero: Aerosmith than any of their albums.

Rome held the record for ‘largest city ever’ (1.2M people) for over 1600 years, before being surpassed by Beijing in the early 19th century.

Red M&Ms were eliminated in 1976 over concern about the dye amaranth that could be carcinogenic despite M&Ms not containing it.

“Star Wars” was originally prefixed by the definite article ‘The’.

Native American Facts…

The Iroquois Confederacy Inspired the Founding Fathers

The political structure of the Iroquois Confederacy significantly influenced the Founding Fathers as they drafted the U.S. Constitution. The Iroquois Great Law of Peace, which governed the confederacy, outlined principles of democracy, checks and balances, and the separation of powers.

Benjamin Franklin, in particular, was impressed by the Iroquois system of government and invited Haudenosaunee leaders to address the Continental Congress in 1776. The Iroquois example of a united, democratic confederation of states played a role in shaping the American political system.

While the extent of this influence is debated, it is clear that the Founding Fathers drew inspiration from the sophisticated political structures of Native American societies.

Historic Events

  • 1269 – The present church building at Westminster Abbey was consecrated.
  • 1775 – The United States Navy (Continental Navy) was authorized by the Second Continental Congress.
  • 1792 – The cornerstone for the White House was laid.
