A very nice Fall day.
I cleaned up around the house. I finally folded up my walker and
moved it to the stairwell. I never use it, but need to keep it easily available,
just in case.
It is so nice to be recovering so well. It seems like June, and my illness
was years ago. I’m eating better, feeling better, sleeping better, and ready to
tackle every day.
Regarding Navajo Culture: The Ye’bi’chei Ceremony is a sacred
healing ceremony of 9 days. There are lots of songs, chants, sand paintings and
the dancers. Every year the 5 Navajo Agencies hold an annual fair that have a parade,
rodeo, carnival, food vendors, crafts vendors and lots of family gatherings…
and after the carnival ends, the Ye’bi’chei ceremony draws many to the event. People stay out for hours to see the dancers.
Many traditional people are saying that this practice has turned a sacred
ceremony into a gathering that has little to do with the patient being healed.
The Medicine Man has always been ‘paid’ by the patient and that family. It used
to be that they were paid for with sheep, food, and maybe some jewelry. The
family always decides on the payment. Today, many Medicine Men are asking for
$10,000 for the 9 days. Traditionalists say this is all wrong. I spent many
fair nights at the ceremony when I was working on the Rez. The Western Navajo
Fair is not having this ceremony during the fair this year. Everyone will see
it that makes any changes in the ceremony and its payment system.
