My Rambling Thoughts
Nice day. Headed out to Sam’s and spent a
small fortune…new Sonicare toothbrushes, new showerhead and some food
purchases. My teeth will be 7 times cleaner and my body will be ‘invigorated’. At
least that is what the packaging says. Nice.
Money and family seldom mix. A friend inherited
about $1m a few years ago. She had lived on a teacher salary, raising two kids
alone for most of their lives. Her daughter and lawyer son-in-law moved to
another state and asked Mom for a loan of 100K. The son-in-law’s father is worth
about $17m. My friend’s money was liquid whereas the other money was tied up.
Somehow, the young couple with two kids, decided that the loan was really a
gift. My friend called yesterday to see what to do. I had no good ideas. After
2 days of worry, she called this morning and said she and her daughter had a
long talk and a new agreement is being drawn up by the husband/lawyer. I sure
hope things work out. My friend’s mom lived to 99 and she is just looking out
for her own future care.
One of my former bosses called to see if I
wanted to go to dinner. He brought another guy I have known for decades from
Tuba. We had a great dinner, caught up on things, and had a good time. One of
the conversations was about Viet Nam. I knew the other guy was a Marine Vet. He
is still active with the VA and reunion thing, and had some good stories. As we
were leaving the parking lot, I saw his license plate…turns out he is a Purple
Heart recipient. Never would have known if I hadn’t seen the plate. Amazing.

Brain Teasers
(answers at the end of post)
Letter Juggle
Language brain teasers
are those that involve the English language. You need to think about and
manipulate words and letters.
Take the given words, and by moving
a single letter from one word to the other, make a pair of synonyms, or near
synonyms. For example, given: Boast - Hip, move the 's' from 'Boast' to 'Hip'
creating two synonyms: Boat - Ship.
1. Claw - At
2. Rag - Below
3. Shred - Ban
4. Table - Seven
5. Potless - Purse

2 jokes for the day
I recently ran into an old student
of mine, who said, “I always liked you. You never had favorites."
"Why thank you," I replied.
Then he concluded with, "You were mean to everyone.”

A man was on a long walk in the
country. He became thirsty so decided to stop at a little cottage and ask for
something to drink. The lady of the house invited him in and served him a bowl
of soup by the fire.
There was a baby pig running around the kitchen, running up to the visitor and
giving him a great deal of attention. The visitor commented that he had never
seen a pig this friendly.
The housewife replied, "Ah, he's not that friendly. That's his bowl you're
using."

Yep, It Really Happened
*--- Woman Caught Walking Dog While Driving ---*
STOCKTON, Calif. -- A California woman
captured video of another motorist walking her dog by holding its leash out of
the car while driving down a Stockton road. Amanda Brajkovich captured video
showing part of her confrontation with a motorist she encountered on a Stockton
street holding onto her dog's leash while the canine was walking next to the
car. The video shows Brajkovich ask the woman why she's using the unusual dog
walking method, and the driver defends the practice, saying the dog wasn't
being dragged. Brajkovich's video shows the motorist speed up, forcing the dog
to run along beside the car to avoid being dragged. Phillip Zimmerman, director
of Stockton's animal services department, said he found the video distressing.
"We have a lack of humane education not only for adults obviously in this
case but as children as well." The Stockton Police Department said
officers reviewed the video and did not believe there was evidence of animal
cruelty, but officials said the motorist would have been charged with
distracted driving if she had been seen by an officer.

Somewhat Useless Information
The smallest dog on record was a
matchbox-size Yorkshire Terrier. It was 2.5" tall at the shoulder,
3.5" from nose tip to tail, and weighed only 4 ounces.
***
Zorba, an English mastiff, is the
biggest dog ever recorded. He weighed 343 pounds and measured 8' 3" from
his nose to his tail.
***
Dogs can smell about 1,000 times
better than humans. While humans have 5 million smell-detecting cells, dogs
have more than 220 million. The part of the brain that interprets smell is also
four times larger in dogs than in humans.
***
Dogs like sweets a lot more than
cats do. While cats have around only 473 taste buds, dogs have about 1,700
taste buds. Humans have approximately 9,000.

All ‘data’
info is from the internet sites and is usually checked with at least one other
source, but I have learned that every site contains mistakes and sadly once the
information is out there, many sites simply copy it and is therefore difficult
to verify. Also for events occurring before the Gregorian calendar was adopted
[1582] the dates may not be totally accurate.
