Today’s Thoughts
High clouds and no precipitation until
later in the week. I was listening to Rick Steves on
NPR this morning. Today’s topic was traveling in Cuba. I was happily
surprised to hear of the changes. Today, Americans can fly to several Cuban
cities with little problems. No more VISA checks, State Dept. Approval, or
red tape. Simply get on one of many American based airlines and fly. Cuba has
also dropped the Turista Peso, so all purchases are with the Cuban Peso. This
has caused inflation for the Cuban people. Americans can not stay in Gov’t owned
Resorts or hotels, but only in privately owned ones, due to sanctions the US
has placed on Cuba. After my two trips to Cuba, this is a good sign for the
most part. The Cuban people are very nice and I wouldn’t mind another trip there. Our discussion group had a very
productive meeting. In addition to making the calendar, it was suggested that
since we were meeting at 3pm, maybe we could plan to go to a restaurant after
the meeting for a nice dinner. Sounds good to me. |
Weird History…
President Zachary Taylor Died From A
Cherry Overdose It's hard to believe, but it's
true: President Zachary Taylor died from
a cherry overdose. On July 4th, 1850, the
12th President of the United States attended a public ceremony in Washington
D.C., where he consumed an excessive amount of cherries and iced milk. The
combination of these two foods caused severe digestive issues for him, leading
to his death five days later. This is one of those historical facts that
sounds too strange to be real, but unfortunately it is. It's a reminder that
even though our presidents are some of the most powerful people on earth,
they're still human and can succumb to the same ailments as any other person. |
Civil War Facts
The First Battle of Bull Run After several engagements at
different points of Missouri and Virginia, the war's first major battle
occurred on July 21, 1861, in Manassas Junction, Virginia, also called Bull Run.
Union Gen. Irvin McDowell successfully advanced on Confederate troops, but
the addition of Southern reinforcements marked the first victory for the
Confederacy. Federal troops were forced to retreat to Washington. |
