Today’s Thoughts
Warming up nicely. Looking forward
to days in the 50°’s. Iowa caucus is over. Keep in mind
the caucus is only open to Republicans, and only 5% of Iowa eligible voters
participated. I had a blood draw this morning. A
trainee did the stab, couldn’t find any blood, then the real teacher tried. Still
no blood. A second stab did the job. I really didn’t mind being the guinea
pig so the trainee could learn. I finally got the books for our
discussion group. We meet on the 27th to set up this year’s calendar. |
Weird History…
Dentures Were Once Made from the
Teeth of Fallen Soldiers Dentures have been around for
centuries, but did you know that they were once made from the teeth of fallen
soldiers? This unbelievable fact is true! During the Napoleonic Wars in
Europe, dentists would scavenge battlefields to collect human teeth and use
them to craft dentures. It was a gruesome practice, but it kept many people
from having to go without their missing teeth. Thankfully, today's
denture-making practices are much more humane and modernized, so we no longer
need to rely on such a macabre source for our dental needs. |
Most important
inventions
1980: Cobalt-oxide Cathode John Bannister Goodenough invents the cobalt-oxide
cathode, a crucial component of lithium-ion batteries—the rechargeable and
portable batteries that are now in every smartphone, laptop, and electric
vehicle. In 2017, the 94-year-old Goodenough (apparently deciding that his
last invention wasn’t good enough) announces that he’s come up with a new glass-based
battery with even better storage capability. |
Untrue myths about
Colonial America…States that never
made the map
People Melted Down Mugs And Plates To Make Bullets Although there were bullet molds that allowed
soldiers to make bullets on the fly, the bullets were intended to be made of
lead. Although possible, it is assumed that almost nobody melted down cups or
plates for bullets. This is because they contained pewter, a substance
made mostly of tin, and inferior to lead. Although it could have been done
and would have been better than nothing, bullets cast from pewter would be
unbelievably less effective than lead, and therefore, this method was hardly
practiced. |
