Today’s Thoughts
A nice winter day. I had a late lunch with Andy and Faith.
They are back in Flag until next week. They said it was a nice service for
Andy’s brother. Although it was very muddy. Gerald was buried in Chinle Cemetery.
The chapter has a tractor they rent out to dig and fill in the grave. The
family makes the cover that covers the casket. Difficult when it is cold and
muddy and is done outside. Always difficult for those who haven’t been on the
Rez. We had a great lunch at Texas
Roadhouse. Looking forward to our Discussion
Group meeting tomorrow afternoon where we will set up the calendar for our
2024 meetings. |
Weird History…
In 1799, George Washington's
Distillery Produced Nearly 11,000 Gallons Of Whiskey It's hard to believe, but it's
true: in 1799, George Washington's
distillery produced nearly 11,000 gallons of whiskey. The first President of
the United States was a savvy businessman and entrepreneur who owned one of
the largest whiskey distilleries in America. His distillery used rye, corn,
wheat, and malted barley to make its signature product - an impressive feat
for the time period. Although he may not have been able to predict the future
success of his distillery, Washington likely knew that producing whiskey
would be profitable. Today, we can look back at this amazing accomplishment
with admiration and appreciation for our Founding Father's business acumen. |
Civil War Facts
Birth of West Virginia After months of debate between state
authorities, Virginians agreed to leave the Union in April 1861. However, the
western counties of the state still needed to conform. While the state
remained politically divided through the war's first two years, the U.S.
finally admitted the nonadherent portion into the Union in June 1863 as the
state of West Virginia. |
Historic Events
1944 – The Siege of Leningrad, which
began on September 4, 1941, ended. More than 1/2 of the city’s population was
killed. 1945 – The Auschwitz concentration
camp, with about 6,000 prisoners was liberated by Soviet Forces. 1973 – The Vietnam Peace Agreement
was signed in Paris (taking effect January 28th). Colonel William Nolde was
killed in action, becoming the conflict’s last recorded American combat
casualty. |
