Today’s Quote                                                        Today’s Meme

"When the sun is shining I can do anything; no mountain is too high, no trouble too difficult to overcome." — Wilma Rudolph

Today’s Thoughts

Yesterday’s snow was just enough to cover the windshield. Now it’s just wind an sunshine.

Israel’s citizen protests may lead to an election to kick out Bebe. The people are upset about holding of hostages in Gaza with the Israeli government not doing enough to bring them home. Time will tell.

I’m not in the path of total eclipse, although I have a couple of friends who will be in the path. Can’t wait to hear their story.

Terms with origins in rural America

Sell someone down the river

Today to "sell someone down the river" means to betray them. Unfortunately, its origins date back to the time of slavery, when enslaved people were sent South down the Mississippi and Ohio rivers.

Native Cultures

Native Americans Did Not Always Have Horses

Another stereotype is that horseback riding was a major source of transportation for Native Americans long before the European explorers arrived. Further studies have confirmed that was not the case. On the contrary, Native Americans relied on walking and using domesticated dogs to carry loads when traveling.

After horses became available, they were able to modify their way of life accordingly - finally able to cover vast areas in a fraction of the time. This also allowed them to become more efficient hunters.

Historical Myths many believe…

Napoleon Bonaparte Was Exiled in Isolation

The common teaching is that Napoleon was stranded on a barren, uninhabited island called St. Helena in the Southern Atlantic. However, the island was far from lonely and had a diverse community of British officials, soldiers, and civilians. During his exile, Napoleon even had a large house with staff, gardens, and access to books and news!
