Today’s Quote                                                        Today’s Meme

"Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow." — Helen Keller

Today’s Thoughts

Crazy weather continues. At 7am the sky was clear. I headed out for gas at 9am. Clouds started rolling in about 9:30. After filling with gas it was overcast. By 10:30am there was light snow falling from the sky. The weather guy forecast rain for today. Oops.

The RNC asked us in a commercial if we were better off than 4 years ago. Guess they have a short memory. The DNC reminded us that 4 years ago, everyone was wearing a mask, toilet paper was hard to find, hand sanitizer was being used many times a day, schools and many businesses were closed, open businesses had a plexiglass barrier between customer and cashier, and plane travel was almost impossible. YES, I’m much better off than 4 years ago.

Terms with origins in rural America

Whistle Dixie

To "whistle Dixie" is to have unrealistic expectations. It comes from the U.S. Civil War-era song "Dixie" and the failed hope of a Confederate victory.

Native Cultures

Totem Poles Represent Family Status, Not Native Gods

When you look at the colorful and intricate details of a well-carved totem pole, it is understandable why people assume these are tributes and altars to their various gods. However, further studies have proven that most totem poles were designed to mark a family line and the privileges held within that family.

High-quality totem poles were usually created from red cedar and would feature a variety of crest animals (or display beings) within it. The specific method and style used to carve each totem pole depended mainly on the specific culture or tribal identity creating it.

Historical Myths many believe…

The Swiss Invented Chocolate

While Switzerland is now known for its delicious chocolate, the origins of this sweet treat lie in Mesoamerica, with the ancient Olmec and Mayan civilizations. They consumed chocolate beverages made from ground and roasted cacao beans as early as 1500 BC. The Swiss merely refined and popularized chocolate as we know it today.
