Today’s Thoughts
A warm last day of winter…records being set here. An early heat warning
for the Grand Canyon below 4000’. This is very early as such warnings usually
come in late June.
I had an eye appointment this morning. I’ve been going to this doctor for
decades. He loves his gadgets. Today I had a new one to try, it is a hand-held device
that cups over one eye at a time. There are flashes of light. It measures the retina’s
electric impulses to the brain. It takes about 2 minutes per eye. What a nice
gadget.
Easter always means Cadbury Eggs. Those eggs are now 5 for $5.97. Ouch!
Ceasar Chavez’s memory has been damaged by shocking sexual assault allegations.
Many of the remembraces for this month have been cancelled. The allegations are
just that. I’ll decide more when they are proven.
Real Hoaxes
The “Protocols of the Elders of
Zion
This notorious forged text
claimed to reveal a secret conspiracy controlling the world. It spread widely
because it fed existing prejudices. Even after being exposed, it kept
resurfacing, which is one of the darker lessons on this list.
The Hitler Diaries
In 1983, major outlets treated
supposedly authentic Hitler diaries as a world-shaking discovery. They were
forgeries, and forensic testing quickly confirmed it, but not before the story
went global. It’s a classic example of what happens when excitement outruns
verification.
The War of the Worlds Panic
In 1938, Orson Welles' radio dramatization presented a fictional alien invasion in a news bulletin style. Many listeners didn’t catch that it was theater and panicked, at least briefly, because it sounded urgent and plausible. If you’ve ever doom scrolled a rumor, you already understand the psychology.
