Today’s Thoughts
I’ve had a busy Saturday,
getting ready for another storm (3-5” expected.
I changed linens and
flipped my mattress. I always do that when the seasons change.
Then I gathered and
dropped off my tax information to my accountant (H&R Block). He will call
me when they are ready.
I was shocked by the
attack in Moscow yesterday. Then, I was even more shocked when ISIS claimed
responsibility. I am so grateful that I was in Russia before the chaos of Putin
had taken hold. Thank you, Focus Travel Club, for a great trip on the Trans-Siberian
RR a few years ago.
A report came out
today about Arizona average teacher salary for all districts. State-wide that
average salary is $62,295. The average salary for Flag Unified District is
$55,627. While teacher salaries here have risen yearly lately, there is no
excuse for the low salaries here. Many consider our town as ‘poverty with a
view’. Housing, food, and gas prices are much higher than the average for
Arizona. Many have learned that you can’t pay for much with the great view. Our
school district has always drawn from the graduating seniors for teachers to
help keep salaries low. That has always been a poor choice to get the best
teachers.

American phrase from the early 20th century referring to bats that lived inside
a belltower.
Influential Women

Otis Warren (1728-1814). Warren
was a writer and propagandist of the American Revolution. She published poems

Britain’s infringement on their rights. (Recommended biography here.)
Historical Myths many believe…
William
Tell Shot an Apple Off His Son’s Head
This
dramatic story of a skilled marksman fighting against an oppressive regime is
probably false. The Smithsonian says there’s historical evidence supporting the
tale, which supposedly sparked Swiss independence in the 15th century. Similar
stories appear in various cultures throughout history, suggesting a common
folklore rather than a true story.
Influential Native Americans…
Tommy
Orange
Author
Tommy Orange is a member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes, but he wasn't
surrounded by the Indigenous community in his hometown of Oakland, California.
His debut novel, "There There," won an award at the 2018 National
Book Circle Awards. In sharing the Indigenous perspective in a contemporary
way, Orange speaks about the relocation of his people to the cities and how
assimilative culture has left many Indigenous communities feeling
"voiceless" and underrepresented.
