Today’s Thoughts
It’s still cloudy
but there is little chance for moisture. I have to be honest; I need a full day
of sunshine. I miss the sun.
We had a very good
discussion group on the Past, Present and Future of NATO. Our conclusion was
that NATO is still a viable institution that had made mistakes but overall has
contributed to the peace in Europe since WWII.
Pence is not endorsing
Trump for another term. I don’t think this will change Trump’s base as they
already see Pence as an enemy.
Terms with origins in rural America
All
hat, no cattle
"All
hat, no cattle" refers to someone who talks big but has no substance. It's
an insult with Texas roots.
Influential Women
Clare
Boothe Luce (1903-1987). Luce was an
author, conservative politician, and U.S. ambassador to Italy and Brazil. She
was the first woman appointed to an ambassadorial role abroad. Luce served in
the House of Representatives from 1943-1974. (Recommended biography here.)
Dolley
Madison (1768-1849). Madison was the nation’s first lady during James
Madison’s presidency from 1809-1817. She helped to furnish the newly
reconstructed White House in 1814, after the invading British burned it to the
ground, and is credited with saving the Lansdowne portrait of George Washington
from the flames. (Recommended biography here.)
America’s Top Attractions
1980s:
Graceland, Memphis, Tennessee
Elvis
Presley’s home and final resting place opened to the public as a museum on 7
June 1982, five years after his death. Near Memphis, Graceland, which the superstar
bought in 1957, is now the second most-visited private home in the United
States after the White House, with typically more than 650,000 visitors a year.
Influential Native Americans…
John
Herrington
When
the STS-113 Endeavour launched from Kennedy Space Center in November 2002, it
carried the first Indigenous American into space. John Herrington carried the
Chickasaw Nation flag, a traditional flute, and a few other personal items with
him. His journey has seen him as a naval officer, a NASA astronaut, and on the
big screen, in the IMAX movie "Into America's Wild." With a passion
for Indigenous oral storytelling and a love for science, Herrington travels the
world to tell his stories from the stars. He wants to encourage more Indigenous
youth to get into the STEM fields and reclaim their ancestral legacy of
engineering, astronomy, and science.
